What a waste of money. I challenge anyone to provide evidence that gun buyback programs do anything to reduce crime. The primary benefits seem to be to 1) let people feel good about "doing something", and 2) provide a market for old cheap guns that are worth less than the buyback payment.
Given that this is also a "no questions asked" program, it might also be argued that it provides a nice opportunity to get rid of stolen guns as well....
I also like how the article says that this will get guns "off the street". Really? More like out of closets, storage lockers, etc.
In any case, I don't imagine any local miscreant is saying to himself, "Gee, I was about to commit a violent crime with this gun, but now that I can turn it in for a gift card, I'm going to become non-violent and look for a job, instead."
It MIGHT be argued that there is some benefit in reducing gun accidents, in that less guns sitting around in homes will possibly result in less cases of children finding them, or whatever. But for that situation, it would be far more effective to offer free trigger-locks, free gun-safety classes, etc.
It is better to clean and prep our guns for the coming social uprising. Try defending yourself and family with a gift card.
Our founding Fathers would be turning over in their grave if they heard about this. HOW DARE YOU TRY TO TAKE AWAY THE SECOND AMENDMENT. Who would be stupid enough to participate in something like this? If ANYONE wants to sell their guns, I will buy them for double what they are asking for in CASH not some socialistic gift card. They are FORCING you to buy from the store that the gift card is for. Society is turning into a bunch of sick morons and anyone that participates in this should be deported out.
How will our school be protected without guns? I feel that if someone had a gun on campus, I would feel LESS safe without guns to protect me. WHAT DO YOU RETARDED DEMOCRATS WANT? IDIOTS.
As senseless as the gun nuts are - my only consolation is they will continue this approach guaranteeing a democratic president again in 2016, that's what I care about!
Xin Han why don't you embrace American values?
Only true citizens understand the danger we face with the current administration and its secret agenda.
Thanks for listening.

I couldn't agree with you more, Xin Han (although I readily admit whether a Republican or Democrat is on office, not much is going to change: Big Business runs this country AND the politicians ~ what they want, they will get, no matter who's in office): the delusional paranoia that has infected so many of our fellow citizens, as proof by their postings, is just plain frightening (but amusing at the same time!)
And Julia,...never forget - those of us on the opposite side of your views, love this country JUST as much as you do: we just see things from a different vantage point (...aka: WE have our feet firmly planted on the ground!....).
Another government band-aid. The people who turn in guns are not the ones committing the crimes. When will we ever learn? Stupid is as stupid does.
The people who turn in their guns are smart, responsible and stable unlike some of the posters here bashing the buy back program.
Bottom line is the country is growing diverse, younger generation is pro common sense and two democratic terms have given us hope in the future.
So to the tea party and republican whiners out there, keep doing what you are doing and pave a easy path for us in 2016.
If the total cost of this program is paid for with voluntarily-donated funds, then that's fine. Anyone who wants to sell their gun in this manner is obviously free to do so, and anyone who wants to donate their own money towards the purchase of the guns is also obviously free to do so.
But I do have a problem with the program if any taxpayer/public funds are being used, even if it is merely in the form of paid hours for law enforcement to run/supervise the event. If for no other reason than the sheer ineffectiveness of it...
Actually, if someone wants to donate some money to me, I promise to take the funds and buy a gun with them. I will then safely store the gun in a locked safe, thereby preventing the future purchase of that gun by a criminal or violence-prone person. (In other words, I will be keeping that gun "off the streets".)
For all the gunnuts, and especially for C.R. Mud, read, learn:
Of course, I realize the facts concerning the success of the Australian buy-back won't sway you... because when have facts ever done that??
