Swalwell reaches way too far

Uploaded: Feb 20, 2018
Our Congressman, Eric Swalwell, seems determined to pander to the mainstream media and give them special treatment.

He introduced a genuinely silly bill that would make attacks on news reporters a federal crime. Doing so, he decried the atmosphere that President Trump has created with his attacks on "fake news."

As one who has observed and worked in the industry for decades, the President is right on some of his labels of fake news -- think single un-named sources that are treated as front page or lead stories on broadcasts.

What's truly absurd is that Swalwell only cites a few cases. It's a non-issue unless you want to make points with the left.

It also continues to wrong-headed practice of singling out crimes against certain groups or individuals for special treatment. We're not talking violent crimes or using a gun -- the best example is the "hate crimes."

Assaulting a person already is a crime in local jurisdictions. There's no need for the federals to get into it.

Swalwell should withdraw the bill -- as should his co-sponsors, among them Ro Khanna, the representative for Fremont and the South Bay.

When it comes to legislators thinking they know better in this nanny state, consider the bill to ban tackle football until high school that was introduced this month by two Democrats.

Kevin McCarthy (Sacramento) and Lorena Gonzalez (San Diego) think Sacramento knows better than the kids' parents.

It's a typical example -- you see it all of the time in the public schools -- of "experts" or bureaucrats who think they know more what students need than do their parents.

When it comes to football, an extracurricular -- thus optional -- activity, the Legislature should but out. This should be a parent decision.

That's not to say there are no hazardous to playing football -- face it, there are hazardous to living, whether it's driving on the highway, riding a bike, sliding down a ski slope or scaling a rock face.

An internet search on average number of injuries between 2002-2014 showed basketball topping the list with 119,589, followed by football at 188,886. Other sports and the numbers: soccer (45,475), baseball (27,208), gymnastics/cheerleading/dance (22,671), wrestling/boxing/martial arts (18,174), softball (18,119) and volleyball (14,304). This did not consider the number of participants, but it is interesting that wrestling and the martial arts had fewer injuries than cheerleading, dance and gymnastics.

Thinking about severe injuries that drew headlines recently, I can recall a college school player who died from a head injury after heading the ball and the recent case of a high school wrestler who was paralyzed in action.

Here's hoping the hysteria surrounding the football injuries does not turn into a publicity gathering stampede, although the bill did receive some national attention.
Community.
What is it worth to you?

That's a lot of irrelevant invective to wade through to get to your point.

I think you're trying to say that assault is a state crime, so why federalize it, especially when assault isn't what the media is being attacked with? That would be a fair point. I just wish you hadn't spilled so much ink on your distaste for the left to get there.

And again with the football comment. Instead of acknowledging the validity of their goals BUT disagreeing with whether it rises to the level of overriding a way of life (a legitimate question), you seem to get stuck in a mire with personal distaste for Democrats.

What is your relationship with PW and why do they want you to wire a column for them? I wouldn't have even read this except that I saw your foot-in-mouth about Asians in schools and became curious. Now, seeing your emotions, I think it's fair for me to suspect whether your Asian comment was also related to invective and not to statistics.

wow, so not his typical warm and fuzzy blog.

I'm guessing he lives under a rock and doesn't know why Swalwell introduced his bill. You know, Trump calling all MSM news fake news and giving license for journalists here and abroad to be attacked?

As to Swalwell: one only needs to look at the margins he won in his first election and his re-election. Clearly those complaining are the minority. the author clearly didn't vote for him.

Sorry for the attacks Tim - it's just "their" way. "Irrelevant invective" and "lives under a rock" - how awesomely intellectual these two must be. Wow, must be just you and me who don't like Swalwell's extremely partisan "representation" of all of his district. Maybe Scott should look at actual numbers, rather than percentages. There are a lot more than two people who don't like Swalwell.

Good ole Scott - trying hard to marginalize anyone who doesn't think like he does - "clearly" we're "in the minority". Only in California can dems feel so secure - they have no idea what their neighbors think, much less the rest of the country - nor do they care. They strut around confidently, until the electoral college bites them in the you-know-what. But still don't wake up. Their solution: get rid of the electoral college - "clearly" that is the problem....

Scary to think I have to share the roads with these people.

Hey Troll: Did you view the election results? Or are you just stating your opinion? You do get majority wins every time, yeah. The minority just have to accept the outcome. Unless, of course, we talk about the electoral college, which ignores the majority...another thread....

I realize you and a minority don't realize Calif is quite blue and has been for quite sometime. GOP just can't get a run going, so they complain and complain about 'elected' officials since their vote LOST. Mid-terms coming, prepare...

There are plenty of 'red' states to move to, aye?

Too afraid to use your name, huh? Typical.

I'm so relieved the media woke up over the past year after 8 years of starry-eyed slumber. I was sincerely starting to worry about them.

I recently saw a montage of all the celebrity dinners and concerts hosted by, and given for, the Obamas. Must have been quite the bucket of cold water in the face of the media and Hollywood when DJT took office...man it still has to hurt.

As far as rep Swalwell, Nancy's teaching him the ropes, he'll continue to do just fine

By the way, when I see Trump is at 42% approval (remember kids, there are at least 5-10% silent Trump supporters)and then I look at the studies that show Trump gets 5% positive coverage by the media..well folks I seriously LMAO.

Yay for Rep Swalwell - fight the "good" fight...resist!!!!!!!!!!

“We're not talking violent crimes or using a gun -- the best example is the "hate crimes." Assaulting a person already is a crime in local jurisdictions. There's no need for the federals to get into it."

Wow, Tim. Your glib and simplistic two-sentence dismissal of “hate crimes" statutes only shows that you just don't get it. “Hate crimes" statutes exist because acts of violence that are motivated by racial or ethnic hatred are a direct attack on our multiracial and multiethnic society. Dylan Roof, the young, white man who shot and murdered about a half dozen black church members at a Bible study class in cold blood understood what you do not. As he explained to authorities after his arrest, he had nothing personal against those black churchgoers he murdered. So why did he murder them all in cold blood? Because, he explained, he wanted to start a “race war" between blacks and whites leading, he hoped, to the mass extermination of blacks. Think about that, and think about the seriousness of that as a threat to our society. And don't think that racial and ethnic tensions could never erupt into mass violence. There are many examples of that in both our country and other countries (e.g., the “ethnic cleansing" in Serbia).

The Federal authorities have good reasons to crack down on hate crimes perpetrated by individuals which attack someone else purely because of the color of their skin or ethnicity. Hate crimes are a serious and direct attack on our society, and they need to be treated as such.

@Paulsen :l"By the way, when I see Trump is at 42% approval ..."

Oh, wait...don't tell me. Let me guess: You're back to believing in polls again! (at least until Trump's poll numbers dip again).

Ta, daaaa!!!! (* wild cheers and applause. Oakhill Sam takes a bow *)

Pretty amazing, huh?

Wow, a 42% approval rating! An approval rating to be proud of for sure. In your face, James Buchanan! You, too, Gerald Ford!

Posted by Paulsen, a resident of Bonde Ranch,

Sam, with all due respect, a fifth grader could see I was contrasting the mid-forties approval with the 5% media coverage...nowhere did I say I actually have faith in the polls..if anything they are to be scrutinized, remember Hillary having a 99% chance of winning the election and all that.

But you go ahead and keep bowing.......LMAO

Posted by Sam, a resident of Oak Hill,
on Feb 20, 2018 at 9:29 pm

@Paulsen

Don't try to pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. You also slipped in your (unsupported) view that you think that there are up to 10% “silent" Trump supporters, thus doing your best to massage the polling numbers so that they add up to over 50%. No need to do that if you flat-out don't believe in the poll.

As for Hillary, you still cheering about that over a year after the election? Lame. How about instead cheering for that more recent victory of Trump-backed Republican Roy Moore over a Democrat in deep, deep Red Alabama? Why aren't you cheering over what a sound thrashing that Trump-backed candidate gave that Democrat on Republcan home turf?

Oh.......

Posted by Paulsen, a resident of Bonde Ranch,
on Feb 20, 2018 at 9:39 pm

Sam I have no idea what the true numbers are..I would CONJECTURE there would be a bump in that range due to people afraid to say they approve of Trump's performance. Make sense?

Sorry Sam, once again you swing and miss. Not cheering, simply pointing out the smarty-pant Democratic-party-loving "data scientists" got it very wrong in the last election. Very embarrassing, no? 99% chance of her winning, imagine that.

Haha - nice try bringing up the Roy Moore fiasco...he was a terrible candidate.. almost as bad as ...HILLARY. And yes, I'm going to LMAO at that.

Tim is right. Our congressman has been obsessed with Trump since the election. This bill is part of his act. His bill is nothing more than a political statement. It is also meant to be a diversion to keep people from looking at their paychecks during this important election year. For many, pay is going up while at the same time their federal taxes are going down.

But I differ with Tim on one point. Swalwell should not withdraw the bill. I want the congressman to continue to push these topics that have no meaning to working men and women.

Though I would agree that crimes committed due to racism/sexism etc should be prosecuted, the case that Swallwell is making is completely ridiculous.

To say that reporters should be a protected class because the President calls their reportage "fake" news is the epitome of stupidness.

Case in point: the reporting on Russian collusion.

It has been uniformly wrong (and fake) for the last year. There has never been any evidence that suggests that Trump had any collusion with the Russians.

In fact, none of the recent indictment have ANYTHING to do with Trump, or Russian collusion. They have all been "process" crimes. For example, the most recent one is being indicted because the respondent indicated the wrong month in his questioning from the FBI.

The press breathlessly says "this is the end for Trump" and you sheeple on the left (and you know who you are) happily wag your tails for a day or two before you realize that, well, Trump 'ain't going nowhere. Then you say "we'll get him next time, Mueller is just being methodical."

Its all FAKE NEWS. You're being played and you don't even realize it, and if you do, then you're just being political.

You'd think that CNN viewership being down 20-30% recently might be some sort of clue that most people are becoming aware of what the media is doing, but not here on these boards, and I for one will be glad when it all comes out.

Just like after the election, we won't be hearing from Sam or Scott for quite a while when Mueller closes up shop not even touching Trump.

Wait and see.

Oh Dan: So nice to see you back here again. But to lump me in with Sam, really?

As usual you get things way wrong. Mueller is coming and continues to. Will it touch Trump directly? Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't matter much unless the House flips to Dem majority. Mueller will most likely hit Trump's family members.

Unlike the lefties I don't think the collusion will amount to anything. More like a few really dumb Trump workers/staff got carried away talking with Russians. I do think Mueller is following the money and that is where Trump family/friends will get tagged. For Trump tho, with a GOP House no way they move to impeach.

All off topic, of course, so doubt this will disappear with a poof.

Parting words on Swalwell: his margins spoke for themselves. When up again, he'll win again by same margins. And those who didn't vote for him will jump and down here in this protected sand box few even know exist.

Sure do miss your entertainment. Too many yanked notes, aye? Love it when you defend and love Trump's every move. Nothing too embarrassing. Telling.

Oh, look. An amateur psychiatrist on an internet forum. How original. Never seen one of those before.

Here's a psychiatric opinion by a REAL psychiatrist: Board-certified, Harvard-trained MD Dr. Charles Krauthammer on Donald Trump:

"Of course we all try to protect our own dignity and command respect," he (Krauthammer) wrote. "But Trump's hypersensitivity and unedited, untempered Pavlovian responses are, shall we say, unusual in both ferocity and predictability. This is beyond narcissism. I used to think Trump was an 11-year-old, an undeveloped schoolyard bully. I was off by about 10 years."

So you're finally coming around.

"More like a few really dumb Trump workers/staff got carried away talking with Russians."

THIS is where you loose credibility. None of the indictments Mueller has created have ANYTHING to do with talking to Russians. They're process-related crimes. You're obviously not paying attention.

As for implying I'm a Trump apologist, that's fine and well. Tax cut is fine, mandate is gone, ISIS is defeated, Russia was just routed in a Syrian clash, Insurance companies now able to offer lower cost health coverage, and the list goes on and on...

Yep, Trump is getting things done and I'm not a bit ashamed of his progress.

"Aye"?

Hmmm, that's a very familiar word...

Yes, Sam, good old Dr. Krauthammer, a television Psychiatrist, who offers a diagnosis without ever meeting, much less clinically examining, a patient. Go look up the AME guidelines, and you will what those who actually practice in real life, not on television, think of this type of diagnosis. By the way, look thru the DSM-IV diagnosis guidelines, for a disorder involving those who have no actual in person meaningful relations with others, but instead spend their live on anonymous internet sites, offering their opinions on everything and anything. I just saved you $375.

Sig Mund, did you that the cadaverous Krauthammer actually died several years ago and he is super duper embalmed and propped up for each talk show appearance. Someone sits under his chair and pulls a string and talks for him, that's why he never turns his head!! The Weekend at Bernie's people were very helpful with this!!!! Just thought you might want to know!!!!

@Sig Mund: “Yes, Sam, good old Dr. Krauthammer, a television Psychiatrist, who offers a diagnosis without ever meeting, much less clinically examining, a patient."

Bzzzttt! Oh, I'm sorry, that's a totally incorrect response Sid! In fact you made not just one but TWO goofs in a single sentence! New record for the week!

One, Charles Krauthammer is not a “television psychiatrist". He appears on TV as a conservative political commentator. Two, he was not offering a professional clinical diagnosis on Trump. He was merely offering his own two-bit opinion on Trump. You're entitled to your two-bit psychiatric opinions, and he's entitled to his two-bit psychiatric opinions - only his opinions come from a board-certified, Harvard MD psychiatrist while yours comes from (yet another!) Internet forum amateur hack with absolutely no professional credentials or training.

“By the way, look thru the DSM-IV diagnosis guidelines, for a disorder involving those who have no actual in person meaningful relations with others, but instead spend their live on anonymous internet sites, offering their opinions on everything and anything."

Well, sorry, I'm not a professional psychiatrist so I can't offer you any help but I think that there are good mental health services in our community for your condition. Best of luck!

It's refreshing to see some critical comments of Eric from the press. I speak with many people throughout the district who praise Eric for some things and then criticize him for others. Point is they can see the positives that they like and the negatives that they don't like. How that will influence their vote is entirely up to each individual.

District 15 will have a choice in June and November. Voting is one of our most cherished and vital components of the checks and balances system. Regarding your comments on Swalwell, I couldn't agree more. I have never cared for the kid, and it amazes me that after more than a year of carrying the water for the Democrats and being outspoken about the Russian collusion, he has gone silent. The mud didn't stick and they are distancing themselves as far as they can from the allegation. With all the needs for this country, Swalwell decides this is the Bill to waste everybody's time on. Is it no wonder the Democrats have no clue, no platform, just hate as their agenda. On another funny note: have you notice that every picture shown of Adam Schiff-ty, Swalwell is two feet behind him. LOL.

Either your list is in the wrong order or your math is incorrect. 119,589 for Basketball is 69,297 less than 188,886 for Football.

While I don't always approve of what Swalwell does, the cost to Federal, State, and local Governments to provide services for people with disabilities is very high. Preventing these injuries before they happen is a much more cost effective way, and it is better for the kids to keep them safe than treating them after the injuries happen.

So why should the Federal Government do this instead of the states, or local school districts? It's because some states don't have the resources or political will to do it. The cost to this country, and families, is higher in states where kids are crippled in sports and left on their own to deal with it.

Saw the video in question. There was no “verbal attack", at least no more of one than I've seen reporters - including reporters for conservative news sites - making many times in the past. He was simply and respectfully asking her some hard questions that she had difficulty answering. You conservatives love to dish it out, but when a piece is aired that puts a conservative in a bad light you just fall apart. Stop being such a snowflake.

@sam

I'm guessing you buy into the "Russia did it" reasoning for why Hillary lost to a dumpster fire, which makes throwing the full weight of CNN at some random citizen with a facebook event OK so long as it advances the blame Russia narrative, the same narrative Swalwell loves to push anytime he can get his face on national TV.

Guy has done zilch for this district, and everyone knows it. He is out for himself.
