Happy Birthday America

Uploaded: Jul 4, 2019
Today we celebrate America’s birthday. Despite the flood of rhetoric from the politicians, we live in the country that provides amazing opportunity for those of us blessed to be citizens here.
There’s a reason that people from around the world want to come here and take advantage of what America offers.
As we celebrate with barbeques, parades (Danville), the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, community parties and concerts (Pleasanton and San Ramon) and “intimate fireworks” (downtown Livermore), let’s remember those who have gone before us and sacrificed to keep America free.
I thought some thoughts by Bob Shank, a Southern California resident who founded The Masters Program for Christian kingdom leaders, about the Declaration of Independence were particularly appropriate this day. Bob wrote this in his weekly column Monday.
“It was 93 years ago – in Philadelphia, at the event marking the 150th Anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence – when Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, gave what many believe was the finest statement about the Declaration ever made by a President. He was often dismissed as a man of few words; he didn’t specialize in speeches. What would he have to say – at that occasion – that might capture the imagination of history? Consider his comments about the integration of Christian faith and America’s origins.

“’When we take all these circumstances into consideration, it is but natural that the first paragraph of the Declaration of Independence should open with a reference to Nature’s God and should close in the final paragraphs with an appeal to the Supreme Judge of the world and an assertion of a firm reliance on Divine Providence.

Coming from these sources, having as it did this background, it is no wonder that Samuel Adams could say "The people seem to recognize this resolution as though it were a decree promulgated from heaven." No one can examine this record and escape the conclusion that in the great outline of its principles the Declaration was the result of the religious teachings of the preceding period.

The profound philosophy which Jonathan Edwards applied to theology, the popular preaching of George Whitefield, had aroused the thought and stirred the people of the Colonies in preparation for this great event. No doubt the speculations which had been going on in England, and especially on the Continent, lent their influence to the general sentiment of the times. Of course, the world is always influenced by all the experience and all the thought of the past.

But when we come to a contemplation of the immediate conception of the principles of human relationship which went into the Declaration of Independence we are not required to extend our search beyond our own shores. They are found in the texts, the sermons, and the writings of the early colonial clergy who were earnestly undertaking to instruct their congregations in the great mystery of how to live. They preached equality because they believed in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. They justified freedom by the text that we are all created in the divine image, all partakers of the divine spirit.’”

VIVA AMERICA! VIVA! GORA!

We are indeed a great country, made up of many people of color, all the shades of the rainbow!

I DON'T APPRECIATE THE MILITARY DISPLAY IN WASHINGTON, DC.

@Cholo, without the military there is no freedom, no independence, no liberty, to celebrate the diversity of our amazing nation. Please give the military the proper respect they deserve on the fourth of July, and every other day. Viva America, Viva our military!

Our 55+ community celebrated Independence Day yesterday as we hope most people do; with family, friends and neighbors in a peaceful place “our country ‘tis of thee" thanks to our veterans. We are honored to have among our neighbors veterans of WWII through Vietnam. Let freedom ring!

Let us not forget that we are the land of the free because of the brave. Our great military is not just used in times of need: remember ISIS? Exactly. But also as a negotiating tool with other countries to keep us safe.

As American's who consider this country to be created by God, all of us part of the brotherhood of man, all created in the Divine image, how can we allow ourselves to have a Presidential administration that supports keeping children in cages, refuses to establish gun control, suppresses the dignity and rights of people of color, and does nothing to protect the Earth and the future of our children?

To "Another Resident of Danville" commentor above, President Trump and his administration have done more for "people of color" than previous Presidents combined: African-American unemployment has recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded. Hispanic-American unemployment is at the lowest rate ever recorded. Asian-American unemployment recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded. Women's unemployment recently reached the lowest rate in 65 years. He signed the VA Law giving veterans private healthcare choices so the never have to wait months to be seen by a doctor, reforming our prison system by signing The First Step Act, Trump cut regulations that freed business owners to grow their business and passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that further allowed business to grow and hire workers. There is SO much more President Trump has done for America and people of ALL colors. Stop the hate and let's stop seeing people based on the color of their skin.

He's a dishonest, ignorant, racist, who only cares about the rich getting richer. Please! He's an abomination, even inserted himself into the 4th of July to celebrate himself and military might on a day meant to contemplate our independence. He is immoral, an admitted assaulter of women, an accused rapist, enjoys tearing refugee families apart, doesn't care to consider protecting our environment, and has led us to the brink of war. He's a threat to our country's survival and importance in the global community.

@another resident of Danville,

Since you brought up the issue of being "created by God", our current President supports the rights of the unborn, unlike the Democrats whose platform supports abortions at any time including moments before birth. Where do you think God stands on that issue?

You also use subjective labels, such as "ignorant, racist" to describe our current President, while @Karen cites objective facts such as lowest unemployment numbers for people of color and woman.

Your lack of civility is also not winning you points in persuading others of your opinions. Obviously, our current President needs a lesson in civility, but from what I have heard the last two years the Democrats are no better in personal insults against him.

By the way, the crime reform bill our current President passed that keeps low level drug users out of prison does more for people of color than any bill the Democrats have passed in the last 10 years.

I come back from a very patriotic vacation visiting Americas Greatest City, San Diego, to read AROD spout his pablum...oh the joy.

I can't wait until after Trumps second term is complete and the US being in a much stronger world position than ever before.

Just look at all the breathless prognosticators predicting gloom and doom with climate change, racial tensions, trade collapse, wars...etc., and all caused by Trump.

What will happen when it doesn't happen? I can tell you what: WE WILL BE HERE MOCKING YOU ALL WITH GREAT GLEE! Especially Dogfather, who doesn't seem to want to participate anymore and has picked up his ball and gone home to Nevada. Or Doug, who doesn't seem to want to talk about Russian collusion anymore and swore up and down that it was doom for PRESIDENT Trump. Or my personal favorite, Sam (may I call you Sammy?) who was wrong on just about everything Obama.

Economy roaring...trade imbalance shifting...racial harmony (despite what the media will tell you)...wars winding down...

It just keeps getting better and you all are just sitting there sucking your thumbs, trying to figure out ways to knock one of the greatest Presidents of our times. Heck...AROD calls Trump a racist, but you know what I haven't seen? Mass protests by African Americans against this president. Have you?

If Trump cared about human life, he would demonstrate it by taking care of the environment, enacting gun legislation, and not keeping babies in cages. If he cared about human life, he wouldn't harm the poor and the marginalized with his policies tailored only for the wealthy. He is the least who follows the tenants of Jesus Christ. His lack of civility is the greatest when he calls people stupid and losers, when he calls women pigs and labels them as nasty. And brags about assaulting women. And the rich irony of him speaking on the 4th of July about the greatness of this country when he, on every other day, calls the press the enemy of the people. Freedom of the press is the first thing that the founding fathers established to make this country truly great. And Trump threatens that freedom every day. Also, he doesn't respect the lives in the LGBT community, refusing to let the rainbow flag fly at U.S. embassies. He also wants to punish women and the poor with his no healthcare policies. Any mother or grandmother who would vote for him should be ashamed.

There is only one God...we are all from one God...including the refugees at the border whom the DJT administration keeps in cages like animals....not pro-life. Failure to pass gun legislation is not pro-life. Ignoring climate change is not pro life. Withholding health care from the most vulnerable is not pro life.

What a woman does with her own body is not anyone's business but her own. Pro-life of course includes anti-abortion...but what a woman chooses is a private matter..not to be dictated and legislated by a government. It's between a woman, her doctor, and ultimately her God. The issue has no place in politics.

@another resident of Danville, "What a woman does with her own body is not anyone's business but her own"... If a woman 9 months pregnant was chain smoking cigarettes, do you have any concerns or problems with that? Her body, so it is nobody's business but hers what she does? I am actually interested in your honest answer to that question.

Posted by Another resident of Danville, a resident of Danville,
on Jul 8, 2019 at 11:30 am

If I am a friend or relative of a 9 months pregnant women who is smoking a cigarette, I would ask her if she knew the dangers. We might then have a conversation, but I would not presume to force her to quit the smoke. I would advise her of the guilt she might face later about her choice. If I didn't know the woman, I would not think it my place to say one word. A woman's pregnancy is private and personal, the circumstances and details of which she should share only with her doctor. A decision to end a pregnancy will be an eternal matter of the soul between a woman and God. A woman has free will and a right to privacy that neither politics nor legislation should try to deny her.

@Karen :"...President Trump and his administration have done more for "people of color" than previous Presidents combined: African-American unemployment has recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded. ..."

Unemployment rates have been steadily dropping for the last 10 years since the last recession. Trump didn't do anything. Unemployment rates would be at record lows right now regardless of who was elected President. Go take a look at a timeline graph of the US unemployment rate and tell me if you see any change in the unemployment trend between the time before Trump entered office and the time after Trump entered office. See any change in the unemployment trend? No? Me neither.

@Another resident of Danville,

Although I strongly disagree with your opinion, I do respect you honestly and civilly answering my question. Our country is much stronger when we can exchange polite, civil, opinions, rather than labeling people as "racist" or other inflammatory subjective labels. If you listen to what the Democrats repeatedly say about President Trump, it is just as inflammatory and personal as what he tweets about people. How are our elected officials ever going to work together to pass legislation that benefits all of us, when their personal attacks are so nasty that is creates a permanent bond of distrust and anger?

As President Ronald Wilson Reagan(RWR) always stated, "we should be able to disagree without being disagreeable people".

@johnyjacksonk12345 :"If you listen to what the Democrats repeatedly say about President Trump, it is just as inflammatory and personal as what he tweets about people."

If you think that Trump isn't mostly to blame for the inflammatory rhetoric and for personal attacks then you're completely lost at sea. This is a President whose hypersensitivity and self-absorption is off-scale. Trump has publicly launched personal attacks on massive numbers of people on a scale never before seen from a US President. He's even launched public personal attacks against members of his own Cabinet! That's right, Cabinet members who he himself personally vetted and hired. What other President in history can you recall who has publicly berated and humiliated his own Attorney General, or who has publicly challenged his own Secretary of State to an IQ contest? Former Presidents, leaders of allied nations, Republicans, Democrats, even Gold Star family - no one escapes being being the subject of an inflammatory verbal or twitter attack from Trump. Trump is now even publicly bashing Fox News because he doesn't believe their coverage of him is favorable enough. The UK ambassador had it right in his personal, frank assessment of Donald Trump: As he noted, Donald Trump is “inept", “insecure", and “incompetent".

Yeah, but how is the US (and the world) doing under his supposed "inept", "insecure", and "incompetent" leadership?

When it comes to getting things done and moving the country in the right direction, I'll take his being “inept", “insecure", and “incompetent" anytime over any other past President.

Seriously, none of you can judge him on his policies. All you ever do is prattle on about something he said or someone he slightly, who just happened to slight him first.

The man is a fighter who will not back down from anyone. I personally respect someone who calls it like it is rather than sit back and take the abuse.

For years we conservative nationalists sat back and watched how other republicans let democrats walk all over them with nary a word. Trump won't have none of it. You all are like shrieking little nabobs running around like armageddon has befallen you now that someone is finally using your rules against you.

He's a laughing stock around the world. It's especially ridiculous how he keeps arranging these photo ops with Kim Jong-un trying to persuade us that he's making some kind of peace, and we all know that Jong-un is just playing him. Trump doesn't read nor have any sense of history. Particularly offensive recently was when, with marble crosses and Stars of David marking the graves of those who died fighting the Nazis on D-Day visible in the background, Mr. Trump used the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy to bash the special counsel, Robert Mueller, in an interview with Fox News. Mueller is a decorated war veteran, and Trump is Lieutenant Bone Spurs.

If you're one who immerses yourself in politics, you know that other countries leaders ARE taking him very seriously, and the smart ones don't laugh, they listen and comply (see Mexico and Trump last threat of Tariffs).

Trump understands that we are a consumerist nation. We work hard and we play hard and thus, we BUY things that other countries want to sell us. We are in the drivers seat and Trump (and the other countries) know this.

What the general population of other countries think about Trump is unimportant.

Another resident of Danville - Just curious. If a mother kills her baby the day after birth, or a week after birth, would you say this is a crime? If a mother abuses her child (smoking while pregnant could be considered abuse) a day or week after birth, would you consider it a crime?

Posted by Another resident of Danville, a resident of Danville,
on Jul 9, 2019 at 8:33 pm

Of course that is a crime and arrestable. I am speaking about when the woman discovers she is pregnant, she has the right to privacy and the right to make her own private choice as to what to do with her own body. Nobody can force her to do anything she doesn't want. Do I think abortion is wrong? Yes. But I also think a woman has the very personal, private right to choose. As I said, it's between her and God. One other point, when these state laws take away a woman's right to choose and force her to have an unwanted child, what sort of psychological, social, financial support, what sort of state programs will be in place to help her with a child she either can't afford or can't care for? I'm sure the answer is none. So for all the religious-based reasons to deny abortion, there will not be any religious-based charity to help her once the child is born.

It's been a bad week for Trump: The UK ambassador calling Trump inept, insecure AND incompetent. A crowd of people in a French bar chanting “F- Trump" on live TV on Fox (Trump must have melted down over that because he ended up lambasting Fox News which is something that he has never done). Oh, and then there was that head scratcher from Trump about American Revolutionary War soldiers and airports (and this from a guy who, ironically, once said that Obama was the one who needed a teleprompter). It's hard to believe that there still exist people who don't seem to realize that Trump is not the sharpest knife in the tool shed.

DKHSK: “Don't tell me other countries don't respect (even fear) Trump. “

I'm sure that other countries respect Trump as much as his own Cabinet does:

Secretary of State Tillerson: Trump is a “moron".
National Security Advisor McMaster: Trump has the “intellect of a kindergartener".
National Economic Advisor Cohn: Trump has the “IQ of an inbred tanning bed".
Defense Secretary Mattis: Trump “has the understanding of ‘a fifth- or sixth-grader"
Head Administrator of EPA Pruitt: Trump is an “imbecile".
Deputy Chief of Staff Walsh: Working with Trump is “like trying to figure out what a child wants".
Chief of Staff John Kelly: “He's an idiot. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything. He's gone off the rails. We're in Crazytown!"

And Dan thinks that other countries “respect" Trump.
Dan took it as a complement when I wrote that he is as smart as Donald Trump.
Only one word to describe Dan:

To help rectify his loss, he attempted to rebuild his stature by claiming that he is in possession of the prized piece of sheepskin. Well, jolly good old boy, I say! Unfortunately though, Doug's rants - minus the raves - appear rather less academic in the thought process than one would expect from such a Nobel Laureate.

But here's the thingy dingy... The left - including sheepskin Doug, spend their time attacking President Trump instead of our true adversaries; such as Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Syria, yack, yack, yack. Heck, I remember a time - specifically the Cold War - when folks in our nation had a united front against communism, socialism, and pretty much any other kind of “ism."

But today? Far-left people, like sheepskin Doug and Parent, would rather sing the praises for AOC, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar. Where is your critique of them, Doug? Parent? Look no farther than the current Democrats - excluding Biden - who are running for President. What a joke. I excluded Biden because he's a moderate Democrat, but he too will fold under pressure and go the way of the far left.

Ah, onto my next rant...

@ Another Resident of Danville (ARD),

You said: “It's why Kavanaugh could be confirmed to SCOTUS...cause the powerful men involved (read Trump) totally got him. #MeToo needs to roar."

Hey ARD, better read Justice on Trial before you launch into the Kavanaugh fiasco. That book just exposed Crazy Blasey Ford - BIG TIME. Great read. The book spotlights Ford's attempt to take down all of her Facebook postings about President Trump and Kavanaugh before her meeting with congress. It also spotlights Ford's close friends who admitted that Ford is not the person we saw stand before Congress. The book is a fascinating read.

@Malcolm Hex :"Oh, hateful little man, ain't cha? What I find interesting is the hate from the left towards President Trump."

Wow. What a beginning to a post! Trying to criticize someone for being “hateful" while at the same time that you're supporting a guy like Trump? Say, you wouldn't be trying to steal DKHSK's “Most Obtuse Poster on PW" award away from him, would you?

Ah, taken right out of the Marxist playbook. Deflect and criticize. So, sheepskin, where is this “hate" from Trump? And please, be original. I know that you and your comrades - including Antifa - believe in groupthink and all, but do try and cast emotion to the side.

Your ball... Playa.

I quit. It's extremely sad and disappointing and scary that anyone would support or defend Trump who is a monumental liar, a sexual assaulter, and a hateful racist. He's completely unqualified and unwilling to act on behalf of every American. His only concern is keeping America white and wealth. Anyone who supports him is also a racist and truly unenlightened about the need for America to have a president that upholds the common good. We need a President who will lift up the conditions and opportunities for every person in this country and find ways to do it. That will truly make America great.

Typical left wing nonsense. Call everyone a "racist", "greedy",etc. and claim to be morally superior while doing it. Doesn't require too many "qualifications" to do this, does it?

@Michael B

After the divisiveness of Obama, isn't it great to have a President who is a true Unifier like Donald Trump? Why, it's like we're all one big, happy family again!

Thank you Donald Trump!

Thank you Doug for exposing the true elitist that you are. I guess all that comes with the territory when you acquire a PhD? (which I have to snicker at because it's not true) More importantly, ya can't prove what ya can't see. PhD? Yeah, sure - LOL!

I would venture to say that you are probably a professional student who can't find a way to apply his so-called academia to the real world.

You're free to think what you want, Malcolm, although I'm surprised to see that you're still pursuing this line of inquiry since you're at a severe disadvantage against me as only one of us knows or will ever know the truth.

You used the PhD schtick to help bolster an argument you made on another blog.

My suggestion? Don't make a claim that you are unwilling to verify.

Yup, the fact that I have a Ph.D. in physics - excuse me, a *claimed* Ph.D. in physics - seems to have become an obsession with Malcolm. It seems to have hit a nerve.

I probably mentioned that I have a degree in physics on one of the global warming debates here. Of course, rather than griping about my claiming to have a physics degree, Malcolm could have simply used his superior knowledge of physics to shoot down my physics-based arguments. But he didn't do that, did he? With Malcolm and Trump it's all “I can't shoot down the message, so I'll just try to shoot down the messenger."

As President Reagan use to say: "Now there you go again." LOL!!! Why do you insist on claiming you have something you cannot Prove?

Looking back, you brought up the claim of having a PhD some time ago during a political debate on Cushing's blog. You apparently did not like the fact that myself and others disagreed with you. As a result, you attempted to "enlighten" us with the claim that you have a PhD - a claim that you could and cannot prove because you, like I, choose to remain anonymous. See how that works?

You have no more expertise in political science than I. But please, feel free to bump your gums to fit your own political narrative. Who knows, we might end up agreeing on something in the future. Until then, keep the pomposity under wraps. I would hate to see that "PhD" of yours (wink) tarnished.

Really? I brought up the fact that I have a physics Ph.D. on a blog that was pure politics and had nothing to do with physics or science? OK, please show me which blog that was.

@Malcolm Hex :"Doug, I'm sorry that you are unable to understand concepts of basic American law. So, let me put this another way. If you accuse me of something, without evidence to support your claim, what do you have? Nada"

Malcolm, you're confused. We weren't discussing whether an accusation in the form of a sworn testimony is enough to convict someone of a crime or cause the police to knock down your door. We were simply discussing whether sworn testimony is evidence or not. The answer is it is. Period. Simple. Not complicated.

And thanks for your attempts to help me to understand “basic American law". I'm a professional physicist myself with a Ph.D. in physics from one of those evil “liberal" Ivy League universities out east so I didn't study any law in school. However, I am pretty good at logic which comes in handy for exposing posters who don't know what they're talking about and making them look like fools.

As you can see Doug, the only fool appears to be you! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! You professional physicist you!.

@Malcolm Hex

LOL! I made an off-handed comment back in October of last year and it's stuck in your craw ever since then? Nine months of fuming over a slight to your ego? Is that what is called “triggering" someone?

OK, Malcolm, for the record I apologize for triggering your fragile ego and making you feel inadequate. I hope that you can now continue on with leading a normal life.

Heeeeyyyyy Doug, you got owned man. You got, as Malcolm said, played, playa. ROFLMAO.

Man, give it up. You got caught in a lie bro. Now your mad. Annnngry maaaan. LOL!!!!!

Hey bro, you call yourself a professional physicist? Uhhhh, is that like a professional physicist vs a physicist? Is that like a professional fireman vs a fireman? Or a professional doctor vs a doctor? LOL!!!!!!
