Crocks on Fox

Uploaded: Mar 15, 2021
The cancel culture meets media manipulation. Stop me before I alliterate again (too late).

I swore I wasn’t going to write about this culture ‘crisis’ of tubers and zoos, but I think there’s a larger concern involved here that justifies the effort. It’s not so much about the so-called Cancel Culture as it is about viewer manipulation by the Grievance Machine. Besides, this is not my worst ever broken promise to myself.

First, please know that I raised my kids on the Sneetches and Pale Green Pants, and the Lorax was a truffula-tree-hugger way before it was cool. Great stuff for kids!

The current controversy arises out of a decision to not republish new editions of several lesser tales in the hundred-volume Seuss library. It was made, privately, by the rights owners. They were concerned that some few portrayals were out-of-step with his legacy of Great Stuff for kids. Now, perhaps you disagree – especially if you think that showing ape-like black people … displayed in a zoo … in cages … is a great introduction to race relations. A “Chinaman” was similarly ‘other’d’ in a coolie caricature.

Now, I’m a pretty passionate free speech guy, but this has utterly nothing to do with First Amendment rights. Nada. It’s about what’s best for small children. There’s time, later in their development, when kids can and should be exposed to bias against Shylock the ‘heartless’ Jew, or _ Jim, Huck’s friend on the river. But that time is not the first impressions of little-kid Seuss readers. “Why yes, Susie, they’re in cages, but remember we’re all created equal.” Huh?

Similarly, the Potato family remains intact and nuclear. You can still buy anatomically ‘correct’ (in a Ken and Barbie sense) Mr. and Mrs. models, which I am sure is a great relief to everyone out there with spare veggies. The new gender-neutral starch was a marketing decision by the toymaker to add another opportunity to buy this Idaho icon.

So, then what happened? Enter Fox News, which devoted itself to fully Four Hours of Seuss coverage during the week when the most consequential (and popular @ 70% overall and majority GOP voters) social relief bill of a generation was being enacted. The covid relief act, by contrast, was barely mentioned. Republican pols, not one of whom voted for that bill, dutifully took up The Cancel Culture Cause, bemoaning (non-specifically) what had been lost and blaming every lefty just short of their fanciful antifa ‘militia.’ It’s a complete Fox crock.

Hordes of buyers suddenly found their way to the nation’s several remaining bookstores. In a brilliant gesture designed to punish the wrongdoers, they bought up the entire remaining inventory of discontinued Seuss books, at retail, thereby ensuring that none of those sacred texts would ever land in the discount bin (that’ll show ‘em!)

PBS did seek-out Mitch McConnell (he who never met a billionaire he wouldn’t rescue). He thought the bill ‘unnecessary’ (now that Dems are back in charge so deficits matter, again). But the GOP message of the week had nothing to do with their cynical rebuke of the successful Biden bill. It was culture war Outrage(!), stoked by a medium that makes its money on White Grievance.

It seems to have worked, based on the ink spilled over it – The Base (about which it’s All) is suitably riled. But I hope that if you’re a part of it, you at least understand that you’ve been manipulated and distracted into this frothing tempest in a tiny teapot.

It may not be the last time somebody tries – after all, there’s an (actual) Infrastructure Bill a-borning.
Democracy.
What is it worth to you?

Well Mr. Cancel Culture Cushing, you have been manipulated by president mumbles and fumbles into thinking that there is no crisis at the border. But go with your bad self. LOL!!!

What was "successful" about the Biden bill?

Only a fraction of the spending actually addressed the virus with the balance of it going to a progressive wish list of spending items and bailouts for state governments. The same states that locked down businesses and put people out of job for an excessive and unnecessary period of time. Now who sounds like they never met a "progressive" (wasteful) spending bill they didn't like and would not support?

"LOL," really? There's nothing funny about the ongoing humanitarian border crisis - it's a tough one as each Administration discovers. We're all of 50 days into this term that's justifiably first-focused on the pandemic - let's see what the Biden Administration actually does over the next several months and years.

BTW, I checked PBS, NPR, CNN, MSNBC - and Fox - border crisis is on the splash page of every website, with PBS placing it as 'lead'. If that's "manipulation' in your book, you might consider a different book.

MB - in context, "successful" only means it passed without them. The rest of your comment is loaded with purposeful imprecision - after all, 9/10 literally is a "fraction." And the bill did address many related elements - hence it's 'the most consequential social relief bill in a generation.' You may consider it wasteful - but if you were unable to feed your family, you might call it a life saver.

So is your response. The "most consequential social relief bill in a generation?" Did you bother researching what the funding is actually being spent on? We should reward left wing states that unnecessarily locked down their residents and can't manage their own budgets on the backs of the nation's taxpayers? Nothing "life saving" about lockdowns for people at little risk for the virus, not being allowed to reopen businesses in this state for so called "equity" reasons, and being forced to rely on government handouts. At the same time, Biden creates barriers for economic recovery and job growth with higher energy prices and increased regulations/taxes.

Leave it to you to spin this as somehow desirable while accusing others of being "distracted" and "manipulated".

Your President is the one who brought on the CURRENT border crisis. Ya know, you and Cuomo would make a fine pair working in the denial department. And speaking of departments and dementia...

Biden seemed to forget Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's name at a White House event " calling the Pentagon chief “the guy who runs that outfit over there." Here is what Biden said: “And I want to thank the sec " the, the, ah former general. I keep calling him general, but my, my " the guy who runs that outfit over there," Biden said.

The, uh, my, my, the... WOW!!! And to think your guy is the commander in chief? His cognitive impairment will get worse over time. Of course, people like you and Psaki will continue to make excuses for him. Biden will leave prematurely and you will be left with Harris. LOL!!!

BTW, ya girl, Harris, sure had a lot to say about Justice Kavanaugh during the Senate confirmation hearings didn't she? But the vice hypocrite has been silent about sexual harassment claims against Cuomo. Must be a democrat thingy.

President mumbles and fumbles plus the vice hypocrite... Oh, what a fine pair indeed. LOL!!!

MX - your scattershot rants suggest an inability to focus. If you want to complain about off-topic issues, get your own blog or write a letter. The subjects for comment are the American Rescue Act, Dr. Seuss, the Potato family and Fox.

You need to confine your comments to those matters. If not, they're not likely to last.

Tom: First, glad to see you are back in the saddle. Was concerned about your health in that you had not posted any blogs for some time, and assumed a "victory lap" blog would have followed shortly after the election. Welcome back counselor.

I think the reason so many(not just the Trumpets who you despise so much) are up in arms about the Dr. Seus issue is not really about that single issue, which on the grand scheme seems somewhat trivial. The reason so many are upset and are now using this issue to scream from the mountaintops is the undeniable wave of cancel culture that is spinning out of control and literally ruining so many good and decent people and their legacy. We are now to the point where the School Board in San Francisco is spending millions of dollars(that could have been used for covid precautions, meals for poor students, etc) on renaming schools named after "racist" like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Enough is enough, to many people, and the outrage regarding Dr. Seus book banning is simply the straw that broke the camel's back.

Ironically, it is your party, The Dems, who historically supported free speech, even unpopular speech, rightfully wrapping themselves around the First Amendment. Somehow, someway, this has all changed, and now your party is front and center in censoring and limiting any speech that does not fit into their politically correct playbook. If your party was consistent, they would also demand that all schools named after Caesar Chavez be renamed, as there are oodles of historical interviews in which he uses terms like "wetback" and encourages actual violence against illegal aliens from Mexico as they were a threat to his union workers.

Truth be told, nobody, except Jesus Christ, is perfect, and using cancel culture to destroy people for comments or views they had years ago is patently unfair, and dangerous to principles of free speech that made our country so great.

Many Americans feel that the SF school district went too far to change name of schools named after George Washington and other greats of our country.

For several hundred years, our brains have been tuned to think that George Washington and those other men who founded this country were perfect men of great honor.

Yes, they did great things but they were not perfect. They were slave owners and committed terrible act of owning persons and treating them as slaves.

We can reject the re-naming. But let's not ignore the horrible truths either.

I appreciate you sharing data and your opinion. There is a lot of garbage information about dementia and other nonsense that do nothing but spread hatred - not useful. No wonder the people who spread the garbage lost the House, the Presidency and the Senate. I look forward to the Lincoln Republican Party that would disagree with opinion but avoid the Trumpist garbage.

Hey Kevin: a bunch of identical posts from you showed up in quick succession. I've taken the liberty of deleting most of them.

I do not believe there is any censorship intent in Gina's editings. I learned today that there are limits to how often in succession a single poster may post. Okay, back to reality... Well, at least for the time being. Let's see how long this post lasts. My screen grab of this page will be my proof.

Now, Cancel Culture Cushing (I'll call him the Triple C), made the following assessment, he said: “It's not so much about the so-called Cancel Culture as it is about viewer manipulation by the Grievance Machine." So-called?

Wait! So, the Grievance Machine cancels out cancel culture by way of viewer manipulation? How clever to replace what is with what isn't. There is only one problem: Obama and Trump spoke out against Cancel Culture.

Former US President Barack Obama warned against social media call-out culture saying "People who do really good stuff have flaws. People who you are fighting may love their kids and, you know, share certain things with you." Former US President Donald Trump also criticized cancel culture in a speech in July 2020, comparing it to totalitarianism and claiming that it is a political weapon used to punish and shame dissenters by driving them from their jobs and demanding submission.

Wow! Two US presidents spoke out against Cancel Culture. But according to Triple C, so-called Cancel Culture is actually viewer manipulation.

Hex: your post above is not still there because you have kept a copy. It is superfluous. Your post persists because it is on-point (glory be) - although wrong.

When it comes your turn to be vaccinated, please warn your nurse to take special care - you rarely ever get the point. Here, the point was never that so-called cancel culture does not exist. It was that Fox News chose to froth-up the GOPer Base by its incessant coverage of this silly potato war - at the expense of actual news, like the American Rescue Plan Act's passage.

Not coincidentally, Fox thus gave cover to GOP lawmakers to piously bemoan the tragic loss to the American Way of Life that editorial decisions like those of the Seuss heirs represent. I mean, what's left of value in this world if little kids can't take-in caricatures of caged Africans displayed in a zoo?

In this case, it's pretty clear that Fox revved-up the culture wars to distract its viewers from a Very Good Thing the government has done for millions of Americans - including many Fox partisans. Viewers of that propaganda machine might want to be alert for future such manipulative distractions.

It's "propaganda" that one of the few media outlets isn't behaving like a state run/Soviet style press by fawning over/praising whatever Biden and his party does like CNN and MSNBC? Boo hoo. In this case, why is it not a surprise to hear the predictable claim that any institution not doing/saying what progressives want as being an outlet for "white grievance"?

Some of us are alert and take a longer view. These would also be same members of the government that put thousands of people with high paying jobs in the energy industry out of a job within hours of taking power, want more taxes and regulations that will end up costing jobs when we need more people employed, are flooding the nation with illegal immigrants just to get more political power, and will perhaps "allow" people to celebrate the 4th of July in small groups if you do exactly as they wish. None of these are "very good things" to those who are not manipulated and distracted. Feel free to call them "systemically racist" as well.

Triple C, you got your panties in a bunch because Fox News chose to focus on Dr. Seuss instead of president mumbles and fumbles? C'mon man! LOL!!! Maybe you should keep those promises to yourself next time and avoid the angst. Allow me to provide therapy.

It's all about the politics baby. What goes around comes around. CNN, NY Times, etc., never gave President Trump credit for anything, so why should Fox News act any different? Payback is a bitch, and it's only going to get worse. I would list examples, but you would throw a tantrum, complain, and scream I am off topic.

Oh, I received my vaccination before most folks - due in part to my line of work. The EMT who delivered the dose reminded me to thank President Trump for Operation Warp Speed.

As one person once said, "If the Democrats didn't have double standards, they would have none at all".

In this case, all that seems to matter is that the people being cancelled/condemned/criticized are white males (especially the conservative ones). Regardless of what they have actually done or not, they somehow keep finding ways of being the "root cause" of the "systemic" problems the nation currently faces. It would have nothing to do with "progressive" policies of expecting no standards of behavior, blaming society, treating everyone as a "victim" of something, and then wanting the government (which does few things well and is supposed to be "limited" in the Constitution)) in charge of and meddling in everything.

Interesting perspective on what's going on in the larger picture: Biden Wants No Part of the Culture War the G.O.P. Loves Web Link A few tidbits:

"The Biden administration appears to have adopted a two-pronged strategy to reduce the corrosive impact of hot-button social, cultural and racial issues: first by inundating the electorate with a flood of cash via the $1.9 trillion Covid relief act and second by refusing to engage fractious issues in public, calculating that deprived of oxygen, their strength will fade. ...

So far, the strategy is working. Biden has a favorability rating of 52.9 to 41.9, according to the Real Clear Politics average of the seven most recent surveys, and a Pew Research poll the first week of March found that a decisive majority of voters, at 70-28 percent, have a positive opinion of the Covid stimulus bill. ...

The second prong of Biden's strategy is to lower the volume on culture war issues by refusing to engage " on the theory that in politics, silence saps attention " exemplified by the president's two-month long refusal to hold a news conference in which the press, rather than the chief executive, determines what gets talked about.

The strategy of diverting attention from incendiary social issues is spreading. “Taking their cues from a new president who steadfastly refuses to engage with or react to cultural provocations," Democratic officeholders “have mostly kept their heads down and focused on passing legislation," The Week's Damon Linker wrote in “Will the G.O.P.'s culture war gambit blow up in its face?"

That raises the possibility, Linker continued, thatwhile Republicans are busy trying to bait Democrats on culture war issues, those Democrats end up winning public opinion in a big way by refusing to play along, changing the subject, and actually making lives of most Americans concretely better."

A canny approach.

I was certainly not a Biden supporter during the election campaign, and when he won about the best thing I could say about him was that I liked him bringing a rescue dog to the white house(unfortunately the dog bit someone and was removed to Delaware for some more training). However, I have been pleasantly surprised by most of his actions and words since taking office, and with the exception of his actions and words making the border crisis 10 times worse, I appreciate most of his efforts to try to be partisan and govern for all of us. He still needs work on giving credit to President Trump on doing an amazing job in fast tracking the creation of the vaccines, and I am concerned that Pelosi and Harris will start moving him to the far left.

I think Biden is politically savvy enough to realize how vulnerable he himself is on the "cancel culture wave" his party is spreading, as his comments in 2006 on the evils of gay marriage would be the end of him.

I am a Republican(no longer supporting Trump after his inciting the storming of the capitol and disgusting violence against our law enforcement), and am open to supporting President Biden if he does not let the leftist push his policies their way, and would hope you, Tom, would not deny how dangerous your parties cancel culture mentality is to the First Amendment and the legacy of some great American heroes who deserve better than being called "racist" and "white privileged". The reality is that President Biden needs to keep pushing that olive branch to the right, if he wants to accomplish his alleged goal of unifying our nation.

D: I think the whole 'cancel culture' concept is ill-defined, and abused by those who benefit from further dividing us, if you know who I mean, and I think that you do. There is also room to dispute whether lefties have a monopoly on it, as you repeatedly claim. The serious historical distortions of The Former Guy's '1776 Project' come to mind, as one example.

I also find myself disagreeing with much, but not all of it. I think the Seuss heirs' biggest mistake was announcing what they were doing, as explained above (the potato mash-up is simply beyond my understanding). The removal of town square statues erected during the Jim Crow era with clear intent to intimidate black citizens also makes sense to me. The "southern tradition" make-weight argument is simply a cynical lie. Stick 'em in some dusty museum as an artifact of a by-gone day that should stay gone.

A lot of the rest of it, not so much. Folks have every right to patition, as you well-know - probably best to just vote it down and move on, without all the hew-and-cry of culture wars grievances - stoked by those who benefit from chaos, frustration and division.

That's why Biden's current refusal to engage - to feed the beast - is so smart. Much of this stuff really is silly season - but covid relief, infrastructure and especially voting rights are not. He's got eyes on the prize as we used to say, and the Presidential approval rating is up more than 15% in two months.

We should all be so 'demented.'

The whole phenomenon might be worth an examination in some future edition of this series. Stay tuned.

Thank you Tom for the link above to the article about Biden's winning two-pronged approach of focusing on helping poor and middle class Americans as well as staying out of dirty cultural war of words.

Republicans have a two-pronged approach too:

1- keep feeding their base garbage information like Seuss stuff to keep them angry because they are worried about losing their attention and votes.

2- changing state election laws in states that turned blue to keep brown and black people from voting.

Which strategy will win at the end? I am confident decent sane Americans will see right through the Republican garbage and reject that party. That is why they lost the House, Senat and presidency all in one Trumpist 4-year term.

In 2004, 34% of Americans were Republicans, ahead of Democrats and Independents. In 2020, 24% of Americans consider themselves Republicans behind Democrats and Independents by double digits. Keep up the good work alienating suburban moms, educated white folks, minorities, young, LGBTQ, and others by believing in conspiracy theories as opposed to science, playing victim that you are being canceled when you are filling the internet and Foxwith all the garbage you want, by congressman going on QANON talk show, by calling Covid-19 Kung Flu or China Virus, on and on. You are free to do all of that - nobody is canceling you from doing that! It is working, your numbers are going down.

@Kevin: I am a lifetime Republican, and since the storming of the Capitol and mob attack on our law enforcement, I am no longer a supporter of President Trump. However, as you probably already know, politics, like the stock market, go up and down, and do not feel too snug in the current numbers, as within 10 years the tide will turn. The tide will actually turn sooner if President Biden lets Harris & Pelosi move him toward their extreme leftist agenda, as I believe most Americans, on the 10 most important policy issues, are in the middle.

Keep an eye on actor Mathew McConaughey, who appears to be preparing for a run at Governor in Texas as an Independent leaning Republican, and I love his quote regarding those who attack him for being in the middle of the road claiming only yellow lines and dead armadillos are in the middle:"I'm walking down the yellow line right now, and the armadillos are running free having a great time. The two sides on either side of the political aisle are so far apart, their tires aren't even on the pavement anymore. There is plenty of room in the middle".

Yes, some of us do. All the way back to Obama who mainstreamed the idea that the nation was "greedy", "racist", and needed to be "fundamentally transformed". That sounds pretty divisive, doesn't it?

The so called progressives are the ones promoting (and defining) the divisive and unsubstantiated "systemic racism" and "white supremacy" claims against those who either don't support their policies or didn't vote for Biden. Sounds like a great plan to "unify" people and solve problems? Not really. Trump was accused for promoting "white supremacy" policies during his term in office, yet he received more Black and Hispanic votes in 2020.

You know, 'they' say that the Serbs and Croats have been at terrible odds since Vlad abused Nicolai's goat in 1437 - nobody's quite sure, but they know they Hate the Other Side. Most of the commentators I've seen date the current Congressional acrimony to the mid-'90s and Newt Gingrich's scorched-earth tactics, based off his Contract with America. Gone were the days of Tip and Ronnie working it out over a good scotch.

It is absurd to blame Obama, whose hopes for a post-partisan world were pre-emptively dashed by McConnell's oft-quoted First Priority to 'make him a one-term president.' Obama even modeled his health care plan on a proposal of the conservative think-tank Heritage Foundation (of which you are so proud)! It suddenly became the Worst.Thing.Ever.

He tried, but Mitch wouldn't negotiate then - or now with Biden. So you move forward where you can - via ACA without GOPer votes, and later by Executive Order, and now via reconciliation.

The GOP has become the Party of No - as evidenced by their lack of Any principled platform in the 2020 elections. It's all about a pathetic fealty to the Former Guy, to avoid being primaried. Too bad Biden will have to seriously amend the filibuster rule to get ANYthing done, but that's the current deal. I'm guessing the Former Guy's influence will wane as he is overwhelmed by richly-deserved prosecution/litigation over his various misdeeds. He'll look good in orange.

'Unity' does not require you to move halfway toward nazi-ism, just because it exists. Biden is calling on America to move away from the dismal white nationalism of the Former Guy - and return to the First Principles of the American Experiment. The polls indicate that folks are listening. Stay tuned.

BTW, this is an hilarious progression:

"Trump was accused for promoting "white supremacy" policies during his term in office, yet he received more Black and Hispanic votes in 2020."

You may find comfort in the (disputed) claim that The Former Guy (TFG) polled better among black voters - but even the most extreme polls suggested a mild increase from 8% to 11%. Now, you might read that as a nearly 50% rise (!), but Biden polled 87% of a much larger turn-out than Hillary's 88%. The accurate read is black vote for TFG 2016: "Nuthin'" - black vote for TFG 2020: "Nuthin' plus a smidgen of Nuthin'."

Then the logical leap to 'TFG's not a white supremacist' because 'Nuthin' plus a smidge' voted for him - well, it's a breath-taking non-sequitur. It may also explain why other GOPer defenses appeal to you - they don't have to be logical or right, they only have to be Tribal.

Before Obama, most Democrats and Republicans agreed that nation was generally good but being run by people had disagreements on policy issues to solve problems. He was the one who claimed the nation was not ("greedy and racist") and needed to be "fundamentally transformed". It is not the job of the President to "fundamentally transform" the nation. It's to defend the Constitution. Anyone who dared to call him out on this (or any other policy issue) was promptly called a "racist" by media outlets and so called "progressives". It's absurd for you to ignore all this and call it a "post partisan" attempt.

As far as McConnell was concerned, perhaps he realized upfront (as many others did) that Obama was a left wing radical lacking management experience and promoting disastrous policies - despite the media hype/lack of vetting. Sorry, but the "moderate" campaign claims just didn't hold up under closer scrutiny if anyone bothered looking at his voting record, what he previously/privately said to friendly crowds, and who he associated with.

Some of us knew upfront the economy wasn't going to perform well after the "spread the wealth around" comments made to Joe the Plumber in 2008 and complaints about the "1%". And some of also know that when the government controls the health care delivery system you are not going to have "more choices of plans and lower costs" that Obama claimed, just the opposite. No surprise that you really could not "keep your own doctor and plan". There is no such thing as "free college" and raising the minimum wage has nothing to do with "helping the middle class" either.

"Then the logical leap to 'TFG's not a white supremacist' because 'Nuthin' plus a smidge' voted for him - well, it's a breath-taking non-sequitur. It may also explain why other GOPer defenses appeal to you - they don't have to be logical or right, they only have to be Tribal."

If you had any "logic" then you would have figured out Trump would have received even fewer votes from Blacks in 2020 than he received in 2016 if he was really a "white supremacist", wouldn't he? Black voters don't know what a "white supremacist" is?

MB - apparently there's a rule that nobody posts more than two entries in a row. If any of your four consecutive novellas above disappear, that'll be why. You might consider fewer words/rant, as there's a max/post, as well.

BTW, beyond your doubling-down on the absurdity that 8% to (maybe) 11% is a tsunami (it's a trickle), what makes you think that African Americans are all single-issue voters?

Biden today:

“I have been hired to solve problems, not create divisions ....."

Here is Lindsey Graham on what he told Trump from interview with Axios:

“And I still tell him every day that he wants to listen that the main reason he probably lost in Arizona is beating on the dead guy called John McCain,"

Wow, what a difference! Republicans can only blame themselves. When will they recognize their problem - first step to coming back is to recognize you have a problem.

What are the problems with this picture:

Web Link

1- white men signing law to restrict black and brown people from voting. A bunch of KKK in 3-piece suits.

2- law is signed under painting of former plantation. Show me another picture of Kemp signing law under that painting! A bunch of KKK in 3-piece suits.

Republicans will pay for their ignorance and racism! Trump did not create them. They were there all the time hiding. Trump gave them permission to show their true selves.

"Trump was accused for promoting "white supremacy" policies during his term in office, yet he received more Black and Hispanic votes in 2020." https://get-vidmate.com https://instasave.onl

Interesting that you'd trust Those votes to have been properly cast.
