A former bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who led a youth group in Livermore was arrested last week on numerous charges of child sexual assault and abuse involving multiple victims in Livermore over the course of a decade.

Although a press release from the Alameda County District Attorney’s office Thursday said Michael Morris remained in custody as of 11:34 a.m. on $920,000 bail, he was out of custody as of that afternoon according to the county’s criminal docket.

Morris was charged and arraigned on a total of 18 counts of sexual abuse against four victims who were minors at the time of the alleged crimes between 1991 and 2001, when Morris served as a bishop in Livermore according to the DA’s office.

“This case involves deeply troubling allegations of abuse of trust and authority involving children,” District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson said in Thursday’s press release. “Our office remains committed to pursuing justice for survivors of sexual abuse, regardless of how much time has passed, whenever the law permits prosecution.”

Morris was initially taken into custody by LPD on May 15 in Chowchilla according to the department’s arrest records. He is set to appear in court for a hearing at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin at 9 a.m. Friday.
