Ann Smith receives her ballot from election worker Shirley Scolini around 8:30 a.m. this morning at the 11th Precinct polls at the Walnut Creek Elks Lodge. Contra Costa County Clerk Steve Weir is estimating a 38 percent voter turnout.

The Special Election is an open primary to replace U.S. Rep. Ellen Tauscher to represent the 10th Congressional District, which includes Alamo and much of Contra Costa County. The top vote-getters in each party will vie for the seat in the Nov. 3 election unless one candidate receives 50 percent of the vote plus one, which Weir says is unlikely.

  1. Buchanan spent almost a million dollars of her own money to get a mere 11 percent of the vote. This confirms that she is grotesquely out of touch with the electorate and even more out of touch with her constituents.
