A 23-year-old Fremont man jumped to his death this morning from the west side of the Santa Rita Road overpass onto Interstate 580, where he was struck and killed by a tractor trailer.

Officers from the Pleasanton Police Department and the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene and located a white male adult lying in the number three lane of westbound I-580, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is not being released until family members are notified.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the collision and no other vehicles were involved.

Police said they received cell phone calls at about 6:08 a.m. today that a man had jumped from the overpass onto the freeway. California Highway Patrol officers closed three of the four westbound lanes of I-580 at Santa Rita Road and Pleasanton Police Officers closed the westbound on ramp from northbound Santa Rita Road onto the freeway during the investigation.

The Santa Rita Road overpass is protected by an eight-foot-tall fence that extends the full length of the overpass on both sides to prevent people from falling onto the freeway. The area where the subject jumped from was directly over the middle of the westbound lanes of I-580.

Commuter traffic on I-580 westbound was heavily impacted until about 7:34 a.m. when all lanes of the freeway were reopened.
