What exactly does 'Identity Theft' mean on the police report?

Geoff Gillette is a registered user.

Good afternoon,

That’s an excellent question and one I put to Police Chief Steve Simpkins. Chief Simpkins said that identity theft is when a person uses another person’s identifying information (driver’s license, social security number etc) to buy things or represent themselves as the other individual it is identity theft.

The California Penal Code definition is:

“Every person who willfully obtains personal identifying information of another person, and uses that information for any unlawful purpose, including to obtain, or attempt to obtain, credit, goods, services, real property, or medical information without the consent of that person, is guilty of a public offense, and upon conviction therefor, shall be punished by a fine, by imprisonment in a county jail not to exceed one year, or by both a fine and imprisonment, or by imprisonment in the state prison.”

Under the law, the Danville Police Department has jurisdiction over a person’s identity. If you are a Danville resident and your personal identifying information is misused anywhere, we can take an identity theft report.

When identity theft appears in the police log it means that someone has falsely used another’s information for one of the goals described in the penal code.

Hope this helps. Any further questions, feel free to contact me.

Thanks and have a great night.

Why is there never any information on the alarmingly huge amounts of car thefts in the town of danville. I had my truck stolen last week, and there was also two break in's and one more car stolen on the same night. I actually went out after the police left and found my own truck, less than a mile from my house. It was along side another stolen truck. I've been told there is only two cars on patrol at night, is this true? And do you actually think thats enough to protect our "small" town?
