Street Smarts opens annual traffic-safety video contest

Middle schoolers asked to create 1-minute PSA on 'School Zone Safety'

San Ramon Valley Street Smarts is calling on local middle school students to create short traffic-safety videos for its 11th annual "Be Reel!" contest.

The contest, open to middle schoolers in teams of up to four students, tasks participants to prepare a 60-second public service announcement based on this year's theme of "School Zone Safety."

Entries are due Nov. 13 by 4 p.m. Finalist videos will be screened at a special award ceremony Jan. 13 at Danville's Village Theatre, after which the first- and second-place finishers will be revealed.

Students who finish first will each receive a $100 gift card, and the second-place recipients will each earn a $50 gift card. All finalist videos are broadcast on Contra Costa Television.

For more information, including full contest rules, visit the Street Smarts website or email

Street Smarts is a partnership among the San Ramon Valley school and fire districts, the town of Danville, city of San Ramon, Contra Costa County and the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs.
