Danville women among tennis team to finish 2nd at nationals

USTA League Adult 40 & Over 3.0 National Championships held in Arizona

Three Danville women were part of the Walnut Creek-based tennis team to place second in the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) League Adult 40 & Over 3.0 National Championships last month in Tucson, Ariz.

The local team, which trains at Walnut Creek Racquet Club, won its round-robin flight Oct. 16-17 and defeated Acton, Mass., 3-2 in the semifinals Oct. 18 before falling in the championship match-up against Louisville, Ky., 3-2 later that day.

The squad is captained by Lisa Italia and features Hazel Indick (Pittsburg), Ruby Jane Roa Kangleon (Union City), Cheryl Walsh (Concord), Lynne Vuskovic (Danville), Chardi Kollmann (Walnut Creek), Rhonda Miller (Pleasant Hill), Cynthia Granicher (Moraga), Elise De Guzman (Concord), Sally Van Oosbree (Lafayette), Janet Nielsen (Castro Valley), Andrea Klembith (Danville) and Deborah Gaisser (Danville).

The USTA League aims to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels, association officials said.

The league groups players by using six "National Tennis Rating Program" levels, ranging from 2.5 (entry) to 5.0 (advanced). It is open to any USTA member 18 years of age or older.
