School district to host kindergarten readiness, TK info nights

Hour-long sessions aim to help parents understand programs, curricula

School district officials are set to hold informational sessions later this month for parents of the youngest students set to enter San Ramon Valley elementary schools next year.

The meeting series begins with transitional kindergarten (TK) information nights Jan. 19 and 20, and then wraps up with a pair of kindergarten readiness information nights the following week. Teachers and administrators will be on-hand to highlight the specific program and discuss curriculum, according to district officials.

Children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 are eligible to begin kindergarten this fall. Kids turning 5 between Sept. 2, 2016 and Dec. 2, 2016 aren't eligible to enter kindergarten this fall, but they may enroll in TK programs, officials said.

"(TK) is the 'first of a two-year kindergarten program' using a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. In addition, this unique program prepares students for the rigor of the kindergarten Common Core curriculum," officials said in a notice on the district website.

Those topics, as well as other details about the program, will be discussed during the TK info nights, set for Jan. 19 at John Baldwin Elementary School (741 Brookside Drive in Danville) and Jan. 20 at Coyote Creek Elementary School (8700 N. Gale Ridge Road in San Ramon).

Each TK session is scheduled to run from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the school's multipurpose room, and each is open to parents throughout the San Ramon Valley.

The district will follow with two info nights the next week to help parents gauge their youngsters' readiness for kindergarten.

"Kindergarten has dramatically changed over the past five years," district officials said. "With the introduction of Common Core standards, children are being asked to do more academically."

"The continuum of language arts, math, science and history/social science standards now begin in kindergarten. We would like parents to understand exactly what these expectations are," they added.

The first kindergarten readiness information night is set for Jan. 27 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Monte Vista High theater at 3131 Stone Valley Road in Danville. It is designed for Alamo and Danville residents.

A second info night, for San Ramon residents, is set for Jan. 28 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Dougherty Valley High theater at 10550 Albion Road in San Ramon.

My children are biting the dust to discover where things are in first grade. Send them on a scrounger chase around the classroom to discover things such as unifix 3D squares, books, entryways, water fountain, restroom, etc. [Portion removed due to promoting a website]
