San Ramon teen wins junior golf tour event

Carondelet's Browne tops division at Pumpkin Ridge outside Portland

San Ramon teen Alexis Browne used a strong finish down the stretch to expand a once-tight competition in her age group to win at the Major Championship at Pumpkin Ridge hosted by the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour in Oregon.

The Carondelet student shot 38-over-par to defeat a lone competitor in the girls 14-18 division during the two-day tournament played April 2-3 on the Ghost Creek course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club outside Portland, Ore.

Browne held a four-shot lead after posting an 88 in the opening round, but the division race stood even when she and Kailee Welch of Huntington Beach headed to the No. 17 tee box in the deciding round. Browne took control over the closing holes to earn a six-stroke victory after a final-round 90.

With the first-place finish, Browne clinched berths in the tour's 2016 Druh Belts Mid Season Invitational in Georgia in June and the Tour Championship in Florida in July.

Browne wasn't the only Tri-Valley golfer to notch a win in Oregon. Pleasanton resident Chase Godi shot 19-over-par en route to earning the victory against five other players in the boys 16-18 division.

I'm sorry, I am not trying to be a hater, I do support junior golf. But does anybody else find it odd that these articles keep popping up of our local kids competing on the HJGT? Yes, she won, but against one competitor, one kid. All the other articles stated that the winners were competing against one, two or three other kids. Yes, the kids won, but against one other person. And the scores are considerably higher than the scores of winners from the AJGA and JGANC. For those of you who do not follow golf, these scores are not great, they are average at best. I just find it odd.
