Monte Vista student named Sports Illustrated's HS Athlete of the Month

Connor Bruce honored for success on the field, work with special-needs youth

Monte Vista High senior Connor Bruce has been singled out by national sports publication Sports Illustrated as its High School Athlete of the Month for April.

Profiled in an SI article and video earlier this month, Bruce was highlighted for his leadership on the baseball field -- not only as catcher for the reigning East Bay Athletic League co-champion Mustangs, but also for his commitment to helping local special-needs children develop their love of the game.

"I feel honored and hope it inspires other kids to get involved in their communities around their passions and to treat everyone as equals for we are all different," the Blackhawk teen said in an email.

In addition to volunteering with Danville Little League's Challenger Division, Bruce also supports special-needs youth on the Monte Vista campus, as a leader of the school's Friends of the Special Olympics Club and through efforts to help encourage equality, inclusion and anti-stereotyping among his peers.

Bruce is set to attend North Carolina State University in Raleigh this fall -- though he doesn't plan to play baseball for the Wolfpack at this point.
