There will temporary nighttime ramp closures due to construction for the express lanes on Interstate 680 through the San Ramon Valley starting Monday, according to Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).
The southbound Bollinger Canyon Road on-ramp in San Ramon, northbound El Cerro Boulevard on-ramp in Danville, northbound Stone Valley Road off-ramp in Alamo and southbound Rudgear Road on-ramp in Walnut Creek will be closed intermittently from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through July 1.
Excavation and paving of maintenance vehicle pullouts on the ramp shoulders will be included among the work. The vehicle pullouts will bring about a safer environment for highway maintenance crews once completed, according to the MTC.
Ramp closure detour routes:
Southbound Bollinger Canyon Road on-ramp: Enter northbound I-680, continue on northbound I-680, exit at Crow Canyon Road, head west on Crow Canyon Road, and enter southbound I-680.
Northbound El Cerro Boulevard on-ramp: Enter southbound I-680, continue on southbound I-680, exit at Diablo Road, head east on Diablo Road, and enter northbound I-680.
Northbound Stone Valley Road off-ramp: Continue on northbound I-680, exit at the Livorna Road off-ramp, head west on Livorna Road, enter southbound I-680, and exit at the Stone Valley Road off-ramp.
Southbound Rudgear Road on-ramp: Enter northbound I-680 from Rudgear Road, continue on northbound I-680, exit at Olympic Boulevard, head west on Olympic Boulevard, and enter southbound I-680.
The congestion-relief project, as proposed, aims to replace existing high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes with express lanes on southbound I-680 from Rudgear Road to Alcosta Boulevard and on northbound I-680 from Alcosta to Livorna Road in Alamo -- approximately 23 miles overall.
In addition to the ramp closures, intermittent and alternating nighttime closures will occur in the northbound and southbound directions in the lanes nearest to the median and in the lane nearest to the shoulder from Martinez to Dublin, MTC officials said.
During the day, construction crews will be around the city streets near I-680 from Martinez to Dublin with temporary and minor pedestrian detours to maintain public safety, according to the MTC.
Officials ask drivers to use caution, be ready to slow down and follow posted signs when traveling near construction activity.
The $49 million express lanes project on I-680 from Walnut Creek to Dublin is expected to be completed by this fall.
The express lanes would be free to access for carpools, vanpools, public transit, motorcycles and eligible clean-air vehicles while other solo drivers could pay a toll to use the lanes. Toll lane hours and rates have not been finalized, according to the MTC.
