Local nonprofit Sustainable Contra Costa is accepting nominations for its eighth annual Leadership in Sustainability and Green Building Awards.

Nominees are due by this Thursday (July 15), and the winners will be honored during an award ceremony Sept. 21 at the Concord Hilton.

The nominees for the Leadership in Sustainability Awards should demonstrate an outstanding commitment to sustainable practices and inspire change in the Contra Costa community. Additionally, nominees should be leaders in making Contra Costa communities healthy, beautiful, clean and resilient, organizers said.

Those interested can nominate an individual, nonprofit, government program, school or business. Self-nominations are also encouraged.

Award categories include:

- Leadership in Sustainable Communities

- Leadership in Food System Innovation

- Leadership in Sustainable Resource Management

- Leadership in Sustainable Economics

- Rising Star Award (18 and under).

The Green Building Awards will recognize the architects, builders and owners of green buildings in Contra Costa County. Award nominees will be evaluated by an independent panel of distinguished green-building professionals, organizers said.

Winner of the Seeds of Change Innovation Contest will also be announced at the awards ceremony.

The contest encourages innovation and showcases creative projects, products and services that make a contribution to sustainability, organizers said. It is open to individuals, teams, community organizations and schools. The winner will receive $500 for a sustainable solution.
