Danville-based Gayler Design Build, Inc., recently earned a REMMIE Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry of Diablo Valley for an outdoor project at an Alamo home.
The project involved adding a covered kitchen, bar, counter and sofa seating areas, and TV and music systems near an existing pool in the backyard of the house, company representatives said.
For the end result, Gayler Design Build snagged first place in the Landscape Design/Outdoor Living $60,000 and Over category when the REMMIE Awards were handed out at a ceremony in Oakland this spring.
"The coveted Customer REMMIE award from NARI is a tremendous honor for our business," company co-founder Darlene Gayler said in a statement. "It is a wonderful opportunity to gain visibility amongst remodeling leaders in our industry and be recognized for our work."
The Alamo home project presented a bit of a challenge because the area near the pool was divided into separate levels by two existing stairs, according to the company. The final design ended up using the two spaces in different ways while aiming to still make them feel connected under a shared pavilion.
"They built a large pavilion that was open -- and then created two separate 'spaces,' the kitchen/bar and a seating area, thus incorporating the existing steps into the space and creating a cohesive design," company officials said.
The top tier was dedicated as the seating area with a sofa and television and audio systems. In the lower level two stairs down, the designers created the cooking, food-preparation, bar and counter-seating areas in separate kitchen islands.
The back island, farthest from the pool, included the barbecue, double-burner cooktop, sink and storage cabinets. The front island, nearer to the pool, featured the refrigerator, ice maker, cooler, cabinets and counter space on one side and a bar counter seating eight people on the other side.
The project also added infrared heaters, ceiling fans, shades and track lighting.
One REMMIE judge praised how the company incorporated the existing stairs, added a lighting detail under the backsplash and included a chiseled edge at the countertop.
The REMMIE Awards, presented during a ceremony at Scott's Seafood in Oakland's Jack London Square, honored remodeling projects in categories such as residential interiors, residential additions, historical renovations and commercial buildings.
Gayler Design Build has its offices at 390 Diablo Road in Danville. The company declined to reveal the neighborhood or address of the winning project, citing client confidentiality.
