Danville to host special exhibit, 'Honoring Korean Veterans'

'Pop-up museum' display downtown all Veterans Day weekend

The Veterans Memorial Building of the San Ramon Valley in downtown Danville is set to be home to a special three-day exhibit focused on recognizing Korean War veterans this Veterans Day weekend.

"Honoring Korean Veterans," a "pop-up museum" running from Friday to Sunday, features military-themed displays of memorabilia gathered from local residents. This year's theme aims to recognize local military veterans who served during the Korean War.

Designed as a free, family-friendly event, the exhibit will be on display inside and outside the Veterans Memorial Building at 400 Hartz Ave. during the three days.

Attendees will have the chance to speak with local Korean War veterans to hear about their experiences in the exhibit's "Living History" area.

In addition to the Korean War displays, the showing will also feature interactive military equipment from other time periods, including a full-size cockpit of an F-8 Crusader jet from the USS Hornet and a "Huey" helicopter -- both of which attendees can climb in.

There will also be a "MASH" tent, tactical operations center and American soldier campsite like those used in Korea, as well as communication gear, maps, posters, Korean War video news reports and home movies, children's activities and a Blue Star Moms booth where attendees can write postcards to send to active military members serving overseas.

Docents will be available to guide guests around the permanent museum displays.

The event hours are set to run from 12-8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit the Veterans Memorial Building website.
