Jewett named SRVUSD board president

Among two returning board members sworn in to office last week

The San Ramon Valley school board has voted to appoint Mark Jewett as board president for the upcoming year.

This marks the first turn as president for Jewett, who was first elected to the board in 2012 and began his second term in office during the board's meeting last week.

"As for the year ahead and my priorities, I am focused on working with my fellow board members, the superintendent and staff, and the community on continuing to build on our successes of educating our students under a "whole child" approach," Jewett said by email this week.

"With continued laser focus on the three pillars of our 'Framework for Excellence' (rigor, relevance and relationships), we will continue to execute against our four critical priorities of our strategic plan: inclusion, Common Core delivery, response to intervention, and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching methodologies," the new board president said, adding:

"Of utmost importance to me personally is ensuring safe, nurturing and engaging climates at each and every one of our school sites, because if any student feels marginalized or disengaged for any reason, the opportunities for educational advancement are diminished."

Jewett and fellow board member Greg Marvel were sworn in to office for their new four-year terms during the Dec. 6 board meeting in Danville, with the district's first-year superintendent Rick Schmitt administering the oath of office to both men.

The pair received their new terms without an election after they were the only candidates to file to compete for the two seats scheduled to be up for grabs in November.

It is Marvel's fifth consecutive term on the board, and the second straight term for Jewett -- the least tenured of the five board members. Jewett served as board vice president during the past year, with Marvel sitting as president.

Following the swearing-in ceremony last week, the board members conducted their annual reorganization during which they selected Jewett as president, Ken Mintz as vice president and Rachel Hurd as board clerk for the year ahead.

He says this... "Of utmost importance to me personally is ensuring safe, nurturing and engaging climates at each and every one of our school sites, because if any student feels marginalized or disengaged for any reason, the opportunities for educational advancement are diminished."

But then allows a 3 day suspension for a bully at SRV High for posting a young lady going to the bathroom and posting footage on social media. Oh but the bully was an athlete playing in a championship game so I guess that's more important. ! ?
What a shame action didn't speak louder than words for this victim.
