SRVUSD readying for kindergarten, TK enrollment window

Info nights set for next week, registration begins Jan. 23

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District is preparing to welcome its youngest students to the earliest grade levels for next school year, with the 2017-18 kindergarten and transitional kindergarten (TK) enrollment period set to open later this month.

As part of the process, the district is hosting two kindergarten readiness information nights next week to help parents understand what the expectations will be for kindergarten students. Officials held TK information nights in Danville and San Ramon last month.

For the 2017-18 school year, children who turn 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2017 are eligible to enroll in kindergarten only. If a child turns 5 years old on or between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2, 2017, they are eligible to enroll only in the TK program.

The first kindergarten info night is scheduled for Jan. 18 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the performing arts center at San Ramon Valley High School, 501 Danville Blvd., just outside downtown Danville.

The second info night is set to run from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 in the California High School Theatre at 9870 Broadmoor Drive in San Ramon.

"Kindergarten has dramatically changed over the past five years. With the introduction of Common Core Standards, children are being asked to do more academically," district officials said in advance of the readiness info nights.

"The continuum of language arts, math, science and history/social science standards begin in kindergarten. As parents we want you to understand exactly what these expectations are," they added.

The online enrollment window for TK and kindergarten runs from Jan. 23 to Feb. 17.

Completed enrollment packages must be received and verified by Feb. 17 to be included in a placement lottery if necessary at a resident school, district officials said. Completed enrollment packages are received and verified at the resident school.

Enrollment applications received after Feb. 17 are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
