Several restaurants and shops are coming to City Center at San Ramon’s Bishop Ranch, as Sunset Development Co. recently announced the latest collection of new tenants signed on for the new commercial center under construction along Bollinger Canyon Road.

Among the new additions is The Slanted Door, a critically acclaimed Vietnamese cuisine-inspired restaurant by chef Charles Phan — set to come online in time to coincide with the City Center’s grand-opening this fall.

“The Slanted Door is one of the finest restaurants in the country and is being lured by so many projects — we consider it an extreme compliment that they have chosen to join in our vision to build a truly outstanding project,” said Alexander Mehran Jr., president and chief operating officer of Sunset Development, City Center’s developer.

“Charles Phan is an innovative chef with an international point of view,” Mehran added. “His appreciation for design and architecture adds to the experience in all of his restaurants.”

The Slanted Door fuses traditional Vietnamese food and cooking techniques with the Bay Area’s “sensibility for fresh ingredients,” according to Phan, who is also the restaurant’s founder.

Designed by the San Francisco-based Lundberg Design, the restaurant will occupy a 7,500-square-foot space and be completely encased by four glass walls. The window concept is intended to give guests an open feel and a full view of not only the surrounding shopping center, but also the restaurant’s dual cook-lines, bar, chef’s counter and food prep area.

Patio seating will extend out to provide guests with an area to enjoy the outdoors as they dine.

“I have many customers who live and work in the Tri-Valley area who are excited that we will be opening at City Center Bishop Ranch,” Phan said in a statement. “Renzo Piano’s contemporary design is what attracted me to City Center and we are creating a unique space that will draw customers in from all sides.”

Born in Vietnam, Phan immigrated to the U.S. with his family after the end of the Vietnam War. In 1995 he opened the flagship in San Francisco’s Mission district, and has since opened four other restaurants across the Bay Area.

Six additional tenants were also announced. They will be joining The Slanted Door at the City Center’s fall opening:

* Athleta, a fitness apparel shop that supplies athletic clothing exclusively for women and girls.

* C CASA, a Napa-based taqueria serving “eco-friendly” Mexican food.

* Mendocino Farms, a sandwich and salad place that creates its food from locally sourced ingredients and offers diners a seasonally focused rotating menu.

* Mixt, a health-focused restaurant that offers fresh salads, grain bowls and market plates. Mixt focuses on creating healthy meals from locally-sourced ingredients “to fuel busy lifestyles.”

* the piece. store, the boutique that supplies guests with “a slice of city shopping,” providing a wide variety of women’s clothes and accessories.

* Trader, a wilderness adventurer supply store that offers sporting equipment “catering to the worldly traveler.”

These new additions will join other dining and retail tenants including THE LOT, Equinox, Boba Guys, Fieldwork Brewing Company, Ramen Hiroshi, Roam Artisan Burgers, M, Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn and West Elm. The 300,000-square-foot City Center is scheduled to open this fall.

“City Center will offer something valuable you can’t find online, the human connection. It’s more important than ever to create a place where memories are made, and where dining, shopping, art and culture — and most important of all, people — come together,” Mehran said.
