A holiday tradition in downtown Danville, the annual lighting of the landmark oak tree on Diablo Road is set for tonight (Nov. 29).
The event begins at 5:15 p.m., when people can gather around the centuries-old tree and listen to music performed by the Danville Girls Chorus and the San Ramon Valley High School Chorus, directed by Ken Abrams.
The tree-lighting is set to follow at 6:15 p.m., with “Father Christmas” and the “Snow Angel” arriving to help usher in the holiday season.
Following the illumination, the Snow Angel and Father Christmas, along with Reel Blondes, The Cinderella Company and CPC Spirit Force Cheer, will lead attendees into the downtown corridor where shops will be open, sidewalks will be decked out and holiday goodies will be on display.
“This event means so much to so many in Danville, and it’s a great chance for our merchants to show their appreciation to those who support them all year long,” said Shelby McNamara, president and CEO of the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce. “Danville is unique because of our small businesses and boutiques, our restaurants — these all add to the town’s charm.”
The evening’s festivities are scheduled to conclude around 8:30 p.m.
This year’s event marks the 37th lighting of the tree that has been standing for more than 350 years.
Diablo Road, where the oak is located, will be closed for the event, as will other surrounding streets. Parking will be available in Danville municipal parking lots and at the Community Presbyterian Church, 222 W. El Pintado Road.
