Local resident Donald Collopy was honored during an award reception at Crow Canyon Country Club, where he received the first-ever John H. Moore Volunteerism Award from the Crows Men’s Club — named in honor of philanthropist and active community member John Moore, who was killed in Danville last year.
According to club representatives, Collopy was selected from a field of other volunteers for his many civic and philanthropic activities, including coaching young people in sport as well as participation in church and leadership activities at the Crow Canyon Country Club.
“He embodies the spirit of giving, commitment and selflessness that John Moore displayed as a citizen and generous philanthropist,” Crow Men’s Club President Tony Giovanzana said of Collopy.
As a baseball, basketball and soccer coach in San Francisco and Danville, Collopy has worked with hundreds of young people as a mentor and positive role model. Club officials even say he still keeps in touch with many of his team members from over the years.
An active member and Parish Council leader for the San Francisco Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Collopy is a devoted man who also served as a member on the Board of Regents at St. Ignatius College Preparatory.
To name just a few of Collopy’s many other charitable activities, he is also a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, St. Isidore’s Catholic Church; has been a member of the Crow’s Men’s Club for 18 years; and has served on the Crow Canyon Country Club Board of Governors for three years.
Plus, club representatives say Collopy and his wife of 54 years, Paula, have called Bingo monthly for 15 years at the Crow Canyon Country Club.
The award was created to commemorate the life and service of Moore, who was shot and killed on Feb. 24, behind a commercial building he owned at the end of Fostoria Way, behind Crow Canyon Medical Center.
Moore’s killer died by suicide on Feb. 27, soon after being spotted by authorities near his parents’ house in Illinois.
“John Moore’s tragic murder last year shocked and saddened the Crow Canyon Country Club and the Town of Danville. He is widely remembered as a selfless humanitarian, natural leader and tireless volunteer who led an accomplished life of family, career and community service,” Crows Men’s Club officials said in a statement.
One of the founding members of the Crow Canyon Country Club, Moore served as president of the Crows Men’s Club and the Danville Rotary, member of the Board of Directors of the San Ramon Medical Center, a member of the Board of Crow Canyon Country Club Homeowners Association and a member of the California State Contractors’ Board.
“In every generation there are ordinary people who become extraordinary people by giving the world the best they have. John H. Moore was one of those people,” Giovanzana added.
