Streetwise: WWII memories
Art Gaskins, Veterans Hall docent coordinator: I had about 60 days left to serve my Selective Service obligation in the Army when Pearl Harbor was bombed. I was stationed in Ft. Knox, KY that Sunday when all the officers were instructed to assemble, and the captain verified that what we heard on the radio was correct and that we would have to extend our service duties to the end of hostilities. I received my commission the following July and was assigned to Camp Beale in California.
