Athenian auctioning off airplane

The Spirit of Athenian, a Piper Cub type airplane built by students from the Athenian School in Danville, will be for sale at the Athenian Parent Association Auction taking place tomorrow evening at Round Hill Country Club in Alamo.

The airplane building project began in March 2003, when aircraft builder and Diablo resident Marsh Freeman and several friends provided instruction to students. Some 88 middle and upper school students were part of the two-year endeavor that resulted in the completed full-size, two-person plane. Students did wood and metal working, put in the controls, and even disassembled its used 135-horsepower engine before it was professionally rebuilt. The plane's first flight was Nov. 19, 2005, at Buchanan Field in Concord.

The value of the plane is $40,000, and the minimum bid is $20,000. Those interested in purchasing the airplane do not have to be present at the event. For more information, contact Freeman at 837-4563. Bid on the plane by contacting the Athenian Parent Association Office at or 362-7275.
