A Lemony petition

Let's see. What could raise money for the new YMCA facility plus be a lot of fun?

Supporters of the new San Ramon Valley YMCA facility, which is in the final phase of its capital campaign, came up with the idea of bringing Lemony Snicket, aka Daniel Handler, to town for a fundraiser. He lives in San Francisco so students and adults alike are signing a petition to get him to cross the Bay for an appearance.

Last week, the petition was at Green Valley Elementary School in Danville.

"The students are very excited about the prospect of having Lemony come to Danville," said librarian Linda Bertolotti. "Some of them even wanted to sign the petition twice, but of course I said they could sign only once."

Many of the students have read all 13 books in Lemony's "A Series of Unfortunate Event," including third-grader Robby Cella.

"I just finished reading, 'The End,' the 13th and final book in the series," said Robby. "It was awesome."

He brought the petition out during lunch hour to get more signatures.

Lemony Snicket has been to Danville before. About five years ago, Rakestraw Books owner Michael Barnard arranged for him to put on a performance at the Village Theatre.

That performance was sold out, so supporters hope the petition will be effective - both to raise funds for the multi-use Y facility on the Alamo-Danville border, and for a fun event soon for Lemony fans.
