Athenian golfers qualify for North Coast

Team breaks school records on the course

The Athenian Boys Varsity Golf Team finished seventh out of 17 teams at Rooster Run Golf Club in Petaluma last week and qualified for the North Coast Tournament of Champions held Monday at Franklin Canyon. The team had set a school scoring record the previous week in its league championship with a five-player score of 394 and then set school history as the first athletic team to qualify for the TOC in any sport.

"All the hard work that we put in during the off season and the refining of their golf swings during our practice sessions has paid off with their outstanding performances this year and last," said coach Walt Abraham.

The Athenian team finished the season 11-0 in dominating the BCL East league for the second straight year as league champions, bringing the two-year league record to 22-0. It won both the year-long League Championship as well as the season ending League Tournament.

The team is led by returning sophomores Jeff Sohn and Dan Bernhard, who this year shared League MVP honors with the lowest scoring differential in the league. Freshman Connor Dougherty has been third on the team all year and along with sophomore Keating Wallau attained first team All-League honors, while seniors Capt. Ryan Scanlon and Jay Sukumvitaya attained second team honors; the seventh player junior Yoo Kim would have been second team but didn't play in enough matches.

"Athenian is a smaller school in the East Bay yet at the Transbay Invitational of 25 teams the boys finished a respectful 12th place only two strokes behind larger school Monte Vista," said Abraham. CharStyle:endbullet>n
