Eighth-grader Alanna Leong from Los Cerros Middle School in Danville was the first place winner in KB Home's third annual Earth Day Art contest. Almost 500 seventh and eighth grade students created art that was judged on creativity and relevance to Earth Day on the watercolor paper provided by the homebuilder; 30 finalists attended an awards ceremony in April.

For her prize, Alanna will receive a new bicycle and a $200 savings bond. Second- and third-place winners also received a new bicycle plus a $100 savings bond. Second place was Winnie Chang from Iron Horse Middle School in San Ramon; third place went to Madison Craig from Thomas S. Hart Middle School in Pleasanton. Runners up included Elizabeth Schmahl from Charlotte Wood Middle School in Danville and Samantha Vilfort, also from Los Cerros. The top six entries are on display at the KB Home Division office in Pleasanton.

KB Home offers environmentally friendly product selections for its Built to Order homes in four categories: EnergyEfficient, WaterWise, SustainableSources and HealthyHome. These items not only preserve the environment, they also reduce energy costs and water consumption which lowers homeowners' energy and water bills.

Danville student Alexandra Curtis was named a semifinalist in the 29th annual "Miss Teenage California Scholarship Pageant" held last month in Los Angeles. Curtis, 16, was selected in the Top Ten out of 175 contestants statewide and was awarded a $1,000 college scholarship. She entered the pageant as "Miss Diablo Valley."

Alexandra, a sophomore at Monte Vista High School, is on the cheerleading squad and lacrosse team. She is the daughter of Mark and Kathi Curtis of Danville.
