Barbecuing restricted on balconies

The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District has noted restrictions on balcony barbecuing according to the Fire and Building Codes that went into effect Jan. 1 in California. Key points are:

* Open-flame cooking devices including charcoal, wood burning or gas cooking devices are restricted on balconies or patios within 10 feet of combustible construction.

* Combustible construction is wood siding or where other wood products have been used on exterior walls, ceiling or decks.

* On first floor units, wood fencing must be 10 feet away from open-flame cooking devices.

These restrictions do not apply if apartment buildings, balconies or patios have fire sprinklers, or the gas container is limited to 1 pound. For more information, call 838-6611.
