Behring's Global Health and Education Foundation also pledged $7.5 million in matching funds to Lions Clubs International Foundation to advance the ongoing crusade to prevent cataract blindness and provide services to the blind around the world. The combined effort is called Operation Global Vision.
The donation was announced at the recent Lions International Convention in Bangkok, Thailand, and is pledged over a period of three years. Behring is the founder of the Wheelchair Foundation, based in Blackhawk.
Behring's intent for the donation is to support cataract surgery programs in Latin America, Mexico, South Asia/India, China and Africa, where the costs of providing these procedures is far less than it is in the United States. The money will go to the Lion's Campaign Sightfirst II program, which has a related goal of restoring the eyesight of people suffering from preventable blindness by supporting cataract surgeries, building and expanding eye clinics, distributing medication and training doctors.
