Cougars stay on top

For the second year in a row, the Sportstrong Cougars, coached by Vince Romeo and Errol Moore, have won the 2008 Grade Based National Basketball Championships in Reno. Last year, as fifth graders, the girls won the championship game against a team from West Virginia by 12 points. This year, as sixth graders, they went into the championship bracket with a 6-0 record in pool play throughout the week to beat the Santa Clarita Synergy from Southern California by 15 points.

Throughout the 2008 season, the Sportstrong Cougars have maintained a 47-2 record with the two losses being determined by only a few points. Team members were also determined to be the best U12 girls team in the state of California and played girls a year older and won the U12 championship in the Cal State Games Tournament of Champions hosted by the city of San Diego in July. During that tournament, they held a 4-0 record before beating the Future Stars out of Southern California for the championship banner.

Team members are Mariya Moore, Natalie Romeo, Taylor Berry, Ashley Ewing, Nadine Masarweh, Deja Stallworth, Jessica Jordan, Jordan Johnson, Madison Burroughs of Alamo and Hannah Hicks of San Ramon.
