Orators to study Constitution

The American Legion Post 246 of Danville will hold its annual High School Oratorical Competition at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Veterans Memorial Building, 400 Hartz Ave. The purpose of the contest is to help students develop an appreciation of the U.S. Constitution, leadership qualities and the ability to think and speak clearly. Each contestant must deliver a prepared eight- to 10-minute oration on some phase of the Constitution, plus a three- to five-minute speech on an assigned topic.

The winner will advance to the District 9 finals Feb. 8, followed by Area 2 finals, state finals and nationals in Indianapolis. Scholarship awards are presented to the three finalists in the final round of the national contest as follows:

* First place - $18,000

* Second place - $16,000

* Third place - $14,000

Smaller awards are given during the contests leading to the finals.

Participants must be enrolled in high school during the time of the competition. Interested students should contact their school's speech department.
