Honor your favorite nonprofit group

Danville Weekly sponsoring new community award

The Danville Weekly is sponsoring a new award to be presented at the Awards and Installation Dinner being hosted by the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce next month.

The Weekly is introducing an award for Charitable Organization of the Year to honor a nonprofit group that has made significant, consistent contributions to the San Ramon Valley with a notable contribution in 2008.

"We want to acknowledge the contributions that charitable organizations have made to our community," said publisher Gina Channell-Allen.

Other criteria are that the group has held 501c3 status for at least give years, and that it demonstrates leadership, thoroughness and integrity.

Mail candidate nominations to the Chamber offices, 117-E Town and Country Drive, Danville 94526 Attn: Melony Newman, CEO, or fax to 837-5709. A form is available on the Chamber's Web site, danvilleareachamber.com.

Nominations are due Jan. 15 for this and the three awards that are being presented by other news agencies: Citizen of the Year; Business Person of the Year; and Educator of the Year.

Last year the awards were given to the following:

* Citizen of the Year - Beverly Lane, former Danville mayor and currently director of the East Bay Regional Park District and curator of the Museum of the San Ramon Valley.

* Business Person of the Year - Lori Sato, vice president and branch manager of Union Bank of California in Danville.

* Educator of the Year - Barbara Williams, a well-loved and highly respected teacher at Charlotte Wood Middle Middle School.

"We are pleased to add a new category to the mix," said Channell-Allen, "and to take part in this exciting evening sponsored by the Chamber."

The 2009 Installation Dinner and 2008 Awards will take place at the Blackhawk Museum at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7. Cost is $90. For reservations call 837-4400, ext. 11.

The Chamber will be honoring the top three nominees in each category at the dinner, and the winners will be announced that evening. The Installation Dinner will also recognize the installation of the 2009 Danville Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board Chris Edlund, the Executive Board, and the Board of Directors and honor outgoing Chairwoman Elaine Cortez Schroth of Bay Building Maintenance Inc.
