Perspective - February 20, 2009

Asked at Charlotte Wood Middle School

What are the best things and worst things about middle school?

The best things are the kids and the supportive parents. We have great kids in Charlotte Wood, and they get my jokes. The worst things are all the essays I have to grade.

The best things are we don't have to stay with the same teacher the whole day and no little first-graders are running around. Also, you get to meet new people and teachers. But the worst things are having lunch at 10:46 a.m. and getting detentions or work details for not turning in a book.

The best thing about middle school is watching the students grow into caring, confident and capable young adults and knowing we have contributed to that success. Another is the staff here. They are able to find the humor in just about every situation. The worst thing is that the kids leave and go on to high school, and I miss them.

I think the best things are switching classes and all the cool teachers. I also like the Friday announcements (on video). Homework is the worst thing on the Planet! Not just school, but the Planet!

The best thing is that it helps keep my troubles in perspective when you know what the kids are going through. At least you don't have to go through being 12 and 13 years old again and all that confusion. I get a lot of energy from them. The worst part is realizing at the end of the year there are still some of my students (180) I don't even know.
