He shouldn't be jogging in the bike lane anyway..........he should have used the sidewalk or jog on a road that is not so busy or better yet the iron horse trail. He got what he was asking for!

I run and walk A LOT as well as drive (sigh- a necessity) and just don't understand why so many people run in the street when it just isn't safe to do so. Had the jogger been on the sidewalk, he likely would not have been hit. No one "asks" to get hit, and I hope for the gentleman's quick recovery, BUT we all need to take responsibility and not increase our likelihood of injury when we can. The Iron Horse trail is dark in the early am hours but Crow Canyon's sidewalk is lighted and he should jog there.

I agree with Lori - the jogger likely would have been able to reduce the risk of being hit by jogging on the sidewalk. Better yet, maybe the driver of the car could avoid playing target practice on people going on their morning run! The jogger could have used better judgment, but the driver is a criminal.

I run on Iron Horse trail in the a.m. and frequently step in what the dogs leave behind and the owners don't pick up! Since I leave before it is light in the morning in order to finish and get to work, I avoid the street but I do wish I didn't have to soak my shoes on a regular basis when I get home.

I just don't understand why folks don't leave the bike lanes for bicycles. Better yet, why is it that people take leisurely walks on the street when there are perfect sidewalks on both sides on the street?

I think the most important part of this story is that the jogger jumped out of the way when he saw the car approaching him. The jogger was aware of the car approaching, made an effort to remove himself from potential danger but alas, was hit anyway.

It seems more an issue of bad luck than placing blame on the victim for running in the street.

To blame the victim is the easiest way for people to feel reassured that they will not ever suffer the same fate.

Carol must be the victims wife! I am smart enough to jog on the sidewalk. Everyone should know the street is for cars and the bike lane is for bikes. I don't understand why people jog in the bike lane. That would be like riding a bike on 680. Some people just need to be a little smarter. I don't know how some people make it through life. Shame on the driver of the car, I know they will catch him or her, they always do........this person is not smart either. Lump of coal or nothing.......thats how I feel! Same thing goes for the idiots who ride their bikes on windig roads that have no berm or bike lane........they are just asking to get killed. What if their front wheel goes off the road and they fall in front of an innocent driver and get killed........to me that is a selfish act. The driver has to live with that the rest of their lives.

Oh ... I thought the "Bike Lane" was for bikes. I didn't know it was a "Bike & Joggers Lane". Since I now know that, then all of the blame should go to the vehicle driver for texting while driving.

I guess I will have to change my routine and move from jogging on the sideWALK to jogging in the "Bike & JOGGERS Lane". Don't hit me, because I will blame you.

Just a thought, but if the jogger "jumped out of the way" when the driver swerved toward him as the article states, chances are he jumped onto the sidewalk - and was still hit. Greg and Carl - if that is the case, you could still be road kill even when jogging on that sidewalk.

I agree that jogging in the road is unsafe (maybe even the sidewalk has it's hazards when someone decides to run you over and take out a light pole in the process). But let's not forget that the driver of the car clearly went out of his/her way to ruin this guy's morning run.

Safest place to jog with the loonie drivers around here is in the middle of the street. no chance of getting hit there.

I jog in the street too because the sidewalk is broken, uneven, and full of cracks making it very easy to trip. The Iron Horse Trail is dangerous too! If one of the rude cyclists riding two abreast doesn’t hit you, someone with their dog on a twenty-five foot flexi -leash will either trip you or wrap the leash around your legs. If the bike lane is for bikes, why was the car driving in the bike lane? Funny how you blame the runner and not the driver of the car. You’re probably the kind of guy who blames women, who wear short skirts, for being raped, rather than the pig who rapes her. Hope you’re not one of my neighbors. We all have our own opinions and I don't like it when I am riding and people are walking or running in the bike lane. I have never had a problem on the Iron Horse Trail either! Just jump over the cracks and stay off the road and you will be safe! You would be happy to have me as a neighbor just because I express myself does not mean I am a bad person. It is probably you I see riding your bike on the sidewalk not the bike lane. If I were to jog on the street, I would be asking for trouble. I choose not to do that. And no, I'm not a street (another stupid remark on your part)jogger. The problem is, Greggy, you made a dumb remark and you got called on it. What if that guy had been hit by the car and died? Wow....I think Bud needs to chill a bit. I run on the Iron Horse Trail regularly and have never had a problem with leashes or errant bike riders. I prefer the trail because it minimizes the risk of tripping on an irregular surface and it is level and flat, us long term runners know the strrets and bike lanes are slanted toward the curve to facilitate water drainage and this angling puts extra outside pressure on your knees with each impact. Reflective clothing is important if you are going to run on the streets in the dark. Seems there were errors on the part of both individuals.

Instead, you focused on the victim as though he caused it. Are you of the criminal mindset, Greg? If they catch the guy who hit the victim, are you going to still blame the jogged? I read what you wrote, Gregster, that is why I commented on your piece of...thought? Anyway, you briefly mentioned that the driver will be caught. But, once again, you still blamed the victim. Here is what the driver did: Assault with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of an accident, wreckless driving, destruction of public property and so on. I'd give you the the actual Cal. Penal Codes, but I think you get the point. The bottom line is that I'm sticking up for the jogger who was a victim of a crime, you side with the suspect. It's really too bad that what came out of that hole beneath your nose contained so much disreguard for the victim.

Let's see, a man is simply jogging in the road and is hit by a car. Old Greggy makes a comment, "He got what he deserved." The jogger could have found a safer place in which to run, no question about that. But to say somebody deserved to get hit by a car for simply jogging in the street is a crude and very stupid remark. And of course Greggy hardly made mention of the fleeing felon.

By the way, I saw SRPD at the scene of that accident the following morning. I saw the light pole that had been sheered off at the base. Also, the grade of the street is fairly steep. The driver must have been going very fast to not only hit the jogger, but still have enough speed to collapse the light pole. Maybe Greggy should visit the scene of the accident. Better yet, Gregster should talk to SRPD and get their take on the incident; I think he might find my brothers in blue having a much different opinion.
