They will then create low paying jobs for high school dropouts and other unmotivated schlubs who they know will continue to vote for them. In addition, using our tax dollars, prisoners will continue to get flat screen TVs and new workout equipment while our college students (aka future leaders) see nothing but funding cuts. Government doesn't create jobs: they only redistribute wealth through taxation. Taking money from thousands of taxpayers to create a government job doesn't create any net economic benefit. The only way to "create" a job is to allow individuals to keep their hard earned money to spend as they see fit or to invest. The private sector is far more efficient than the government. Millions of individuals spending or investing their hard-earned money more efficiently than the government actually creates jobs.

McNerney's latest ads attacking Harmer cite "sources" dated 1994 & 1996. That's pathetic. McNerney doesn't have anything good to say about himself, so he is grasping at straws. Bettye, don't buy all the crap you see on TV.

My first comment is to Dalen Fuller. Please get your documents straight! "We the People", is not part of the Declaration of Independence, it is the beginning of the Preamble to the Constitution. Look it up, the preamble actually does not have any legal weight nor does it actually set any laws. According to the New Webster's dictionary, preamble is "an introductory part of a speech or piece of writing". These are lovely words that might be called 18th century rhetoric, no disrespect intended.

My second comment, not directed to Mr. Fuller, is: Why do Tea Party supporters alway claim the Constitution backs up their statements or beliefs? I, for one, would love to hear or see written, to which part of this document they refer.

Question: How many years in office will it take for Mr. Obama to actually have any responsibility for anything?

We know that the answer is at least two years, since in the minds of his dwindling number of supporters everything is still Bush's fault.

In reality, the annual deficit for Mr. Obama's first year in office was between 2 and 3 times the worst deficit of Bush's terms. And in year two of Mr. Obama's turn, the annual deficit is still almost twice the worst of the Bush years. At some point he has to take at least some level of responsibility, although I am not holding my breath.

To be honest, I feel that the Congress bears most of the responsibility for high deficit spending. The worst deficits of the Bush years occurred after the Dems gained control of Congress in 2006. Where Bush deserves a lot of blame/criticism is in not wielding his veto power. He used the veto far less than most presidents.

One of the reasons that the economy looked fairly good under Clinton is that there was a Republican Congress for the last 6 years of his terms in office, from the 1994 election onward. Clinton was smart enough, and pragmatic enough, to recognize the practical advantages for the economy of signing most of the legislation that the Republican Congress sent his way, even while making speeches denouncing them.

There is an argument to be made in favor of "split governments", that the government is most responsible when different parties control the Congress and the Presidency. My own ranking of the various combinations, from highest level of fiscal responsibility to lowest is:

Best - Republican Congress (or at least House) and Dem President
Next best - Dem. Congress and Republican President
next best - Republican in both branches
Worst - Dem. in both branches (which is what we have now).

Numbers 2 and 3 on the list above might not be in the right order...

I'd be happy to meet with and/or debate any of the liberals who accuse me of being extremist or a Fox watcher. I have never watched a politically-centered news show on any TV channel and I am very sure that my views represent the majority of Americans so they can't be that "far right." In order for government schools to improve, public teacher's unions and tenure need to be terminated. There is no logical reason why there ought to be tenure for an elemetary school teacher or any k-12 teacher. Our children ought to be taught by government employees willing to compete for those jobs just like the private sector. If they aren't willing to compete for those positions, they shouldn't teach.

At the end of the day one gets judged by one's deeds. I recall when Mr. McNerney first got elected, although he was not my choice, he presented a moderate and responsible image. Now we have a record of his performance and we can see that even if he was indeed moderate the influence of the party leadership has resulted in a record that is not what many of his constituents approve. David Harmer represents a departure from Mr. McNerney's approach to issues. If you like the present situation then Mr. McNerney is your person, if you want change and feel we are on the wrong track Mr. Harmer can provide you that alternative.

In reading all the comments on several of the topics on this forum re McNerney and Harmer, I note that while Fox is noted several times in a very demeaning way (as is the Tea Party), noone notes that MSNBC or CNN or NPR are biased (nor Behar, Colbert, Matthews etc) and that lefty leaning people too take their talking points from them, etc. It reminds me of the first Reagan convention when Dan Rather after Reagan's speech took time to note how scripted the conventioneer's response was but with the following Democratic convention he only noted, with tears in his eyes, the democratic enthusiasm, even though, as most know it too is scripted in exactly the same way. In exactly the same way the above writers are biased and can only throw stones rather than debate or have fact based discourse.

Go Jake for presenting the facts of the race succintly without the blame and namecalling of the writers above you. The civil discourse can still be present but it has to be on both sides. Behar type namecalling is truly over the line as is the whining about Fox etc in all the above posts.
