Letter: McNerney will create jobs

Original post made on Oct 22, 2010

"I write with rage and confusion to ask what David Harmer proposes to do when 'government exits the business of running and funding schools' (SF Chronicle op. ed. 2000). My rage is because of the overuse of the word 'government' that is tiresome and undefined."

The only jobs that are stimulated by folks with McNerny syle ideologies are government jobs. Harmer thinks the public school system is broken. He thinks the whole system requires a structural audit from the ground up. I agree with him. McNerny supporters are miscategorizing Harmer's stand on public schools. Harmer's never stated that he'd do away with public education... but he does believe that there's much room for improvement. One of those areas areas of improvement might lie within the teachers unions... unions which place its own health and well being in front of the best interests of the students. Does it really surprise you that these same unions are now taking shots at Harmer and lying about his view of public education? Duh. See you at the polls.

Waiting for the puppet Fox News watchers to start spilling their whiny hateful talking points all over this comment section. I am looking to another day of "Obamacare", "path to Socialism" "destroy our kids future", "puppet to Pelosi" here we come. I am just looking forward to the new hot hate phrase of the day from Glen, Sarah Fox News or the other hate mongers. Will it be about the danger of Muslims, Hispanics, Jews. I cant wait, I need to get my juices flowing

The first sentence stopped me in my tracks: "I write with RAGE and CONFUSION!" Does this describe the mindset of constructive discourse, the kind of civil communication we all deserve to make educated decisions?

The Dems will continue to tax businesses and the indivuduals who have worked hard to earn their wealth. They will then create low paying jobs for high school dropouts and other unmotivated schlubs who they know will continue to vote for them. In addition, using our tax dollars, prisoners will continue to get flat screen TVs and new workout equipment while our college students (aka future leaders) see nothing but funding cuts. I will not vote for anything or anyone that asks me to give the government more money as they have proven time and time again that private industry can provide the same services more efficiaently.

McNerney doesn't have the slightest idea of how to create jobs.

Democrats can only give you money (other people's money). Republicans can give you jobs. Which do you prefer?

[removed] I am a Fox News watcher, but I also watch MSNBC so I know there is great distortion in News reporting and it doesn't come from Fox News. Manny please try to address the issues and stop the progressive leftist bomb throwing.

Bette..."Rage and Confusion". There in lies that problem. We need to have truthful intellectual dialog to get to that which is best for our Country...for our future. David Harmer has the intelligence and experience to get us back on track. He and his family are invested in the PUBLIC SCHOOLS! He has raised money for the schools to reduce class size. His wife TEACHES in the PUBLIUC SCHOOLS. His 4 children ATTEND PUBLIC SCHOOLS. David is in the TRENCHES helping the PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Harmer is part of the solution and is running to follow the Constitution as it was intended. We should all be alarmed with the direction the current leaders have taken us. In the first two months of the current Congress, Jerry McNerney voted for $1.2 trillion in new spending. That’s over $1 billion of spending per hour for each of Congress’s first 50 days. What do you think that kind of spending does for our future...for our children's future? To set the record straight, here is why David is running: "I’m running for Congress because I want to stop growing the government and start growing the economy. I want to balance the budget by controlling spending, not by raising taxes. And I want to liberate small businesses from excessive taxation and regulation so they can once again prosper and create new jobs. Most of all, I’m running to be able to tell my children that when the opportunity arose, I did everything within my power to keep them free." David is an honorable man. We NEED honorable leaders so that our wonderful Nation remains that way!.

liberty, you make me laugh! You know the old saying. How do you know when a Fox commentator is lying. Their lips are moving. BTW I am not a progressive (though I dont think being a progressive is necessarily a bad thing for this country) and was a republican once. Fox and their believers have destroyed any civil discourse in this country.

"Rage & Confusion" I have 3 words for you and you can find them in the Declaration of Independence it is "WE THE PEOPLE" not we the government it is by the people, for the people and of the people not for the politician, by the politician and of the politician.

Manny, it's great to see someone take on the far right extremists and their fear mongering diatribe. Sound bites and selfish ideas are the core of their views and the Tea Bagger friends.

Government doesn't create jobs: they only redistribute wealth through taxation. Taking money from thousands of taxpayers to create a government job doesn't create any net economic benefit. The only way to "create" a job is to allow individuals to keep their hard earned money to spend as they see fit or to invest. The private sector is far more efficient than the government. Millions of individuals spending or investing their hard-earned money more efficiently than the government actually creates jobs.

McNerney's latest ads attacking Harmer cite "sources" dated 1994 & 1996. That's pathetic. McNerney doesn't have anything good to say about himself, so he is grasping at straws. Bettye, don't buy all the crap you see on TV.

My first comment is to Dalen Fuller. Please get your documents straight! "We the People", is not part of the Declaration of Independence, it is the beginning of the Preamble to the Constitution. Look it up, the preamble actually does not have any legal weight nor does it actually set any laws. According to the New Webster's dictionary, preamble is "an introductory part of a speech or piece of writing". These are lovely words that might be called 18th century rhetoric, no disrespect intended.

My second comment, not directed to Mr. Fuller, is: Why do Tea Party supporters alway claim the Constitution backs up their statements or beliefs? I, for one, would love to hear or see written, to which part of this document they refer.

Last comment is to Manny. One of the first things I do in the morning is to read the comments to articles and letters from Danville Express. They either inspire me or anger me enough to get the energy to read my emails!

Garsh, vegasmom -- are you saying "he was young and needed the money" when he espoused abolition of public education and privatizing Social Security?

Has Mr. Harmer disavowed his published thinktank articles? No, he hasn't. He may properly hope that nobody bothers to find out about them, and him -- but they're right (far, far Right) in line with his current positions.

Those are crack-pot positions. And he has to wear them.

I understand perfectly! The "Rage" comes from being betrayed by the promisses of "Hope and Change." The confusion comes from watching that dream crumble around one. I too understand what McNerney will do if elected - say one thing to look moderate and vote the radical party line.

Mr. McNerney knows nothing about creating jobs. He was a failure in the private sector. His attempt to by the veteran vote with his misleading TV commercials is disgusting. Most of us veterans are way to smart to be sucked in by his one issue campaign. Let's hope the majority of voters see through this and send a man to Washington that will help get our house in order and put AMERICA back on the right track.

I agree with Bette's comments and am appalled at the hostility that is shown in the remarks often in these discussions. I have also seen the vitriolity that Mike Doyle mentioned earlier this week. What happened to discussion of issues with facts to support your position? What happened to civil behavior? We are an educated population in this area yet you would not know it from the dogmatic comments many are making.

[Portion removed] Explain how our children are going to repay $125 trillion in debt (which includes all the real unfunded liabilities of the social programs: social security, medicare, medicaid, pharmaceuticals, Obamarx-care)? Democrats and Republicans have been ignoring the fact that the Federal government is bankrupt by only claiming that our nation's debt is now $13.6 trillion. The total obligations of the Federal government exceed the value of all cash and property on earth. Dude, it doesn't matter if you watch Fox News in a rage, or MSNBC while you're lighting one up, $125 trillion in total debt is a catastrophe. All tax and spend politicians from either party need to be fired.....and we ought to start with Jerry McNerney, the mathematician that evidently can't do the simple math.

Jerry McNerney by the Numbers…

90,000 Number of jobs that have been lost in the California’s 11th Congressional District since Jerry McNerney has been in Congress.

70 Number of days until the largest tax hikes in U.S. history begins—thanks to inaction by Nancy Pelosi foot soldiers like Jerry McNerney.

11 With your help, the number of days until Jerry McNerney is voted out of office.

122,000 Each taxpayer’s share of the national debt, thanks to runaway spending in Washington, D.C.

95 The percentage of times that Jerry McNerney has voted with Nancy Pelosi and her job killing agenda.

Question: How many years in office will it take for Mr. Obama to actually have any responsibility for anything?

We know that the answer is at least two years, since in the minds of his dwindling number of supporters everything is still Bush's fault.

In reality, the annual deficit for Mr. Obama's first year in office was between 2 and 3 times the worst deficit of Bush's terms. And in year two of Mr. Obama's turn, the annual deficit is still almost twice the worst of the Bush years. At some point he has to take at least some level of responsibility, although I am not holding my breath.

To be honest, I feel that the Congress bears most of the responsibility for high deficit spending. The worst deficits of the Bush years occurred after the Dems gained control of Congress in 2006. Where Bush deserves a lot of blame/criticism is in not wielding his veto power. He used the veto far less than most presidents.

One of the reasons that the economy looked fairly good under Clinton is that there was a Republican Congress for the last 6 years of his terms in office, from the 1994 election onward. Clinton was smart enough, and pragmatic enough, to recognize the practical advantages for the economy of signing most of the legislation that the Republican Congress sent his way, even while making speeches denouncing them.

There is an argument to be made in favor of "split governments", that the government is most responsible when different parties control the Congress and the Presidency. My own ranking of the various combinations, from highest level of fiscal responsibility to lowest is:

Best - Republican Congress (or at least House) and Dem President
Next best - Dem. Congress and Republican President
next best - Republican in both branches
Worst - Dem. in both branches (which is what we have now).

Numbers 2 and 3 on the list above might not be in the right order...

I'd be happy to meet with and/or debate any of the liberals who accuse me of being extremist or a Fox watcher. I have never watched a politically-centered news show on any TV channel and I am very sure that my views represent the majority of Americans so they can't be that "far right." I invite those who disagree with my point of view to stop the knee-jerk rhetoric and have an intelligent conversation.

"So long as the state Constitution mandates free public schools, a voucher system (or refundable tuition tax credit) is the best we can do. To attain quantum leaps in educational quality and opportunity, however, we need to separate school and state entirely. Government should exit the business of running and funding schools."

Harmer harming the schools ????????????????????

Guess he and Thomas jefferson are not on the same page.

In order for government schools to improve, public teacher's unions and tenure need to be terminated. There is no logical reason why there ought to be tenure for an elemetary school teacher or any k-12 teacher. Our children ought to be taught by government employees willing to compete for those jobs just like the private sector. If they aren't willing to compete for those positions, they shouldn't teach.

Hey George,

You say "Harmer's never stated that he'd do away with public education... but he does believe that there's much room for improvement."

then what does this mean (and these are David Harmer's exact words)

"So long as the state Constitution mandates free public schools, a voucher system (or refundable tuition tax credit) is the best we can do. To attain quantum leaps in educational quality and opportunity, however, we need to separate school and state entirely. Government should exit the business of running and funding schools."

That last sentence certainly says it all. I am sure Harmer is glad you support. He certainly doesn't need anyone who can read.

At the end of the day one gets judged by one's deeds. I recall when Mr. McNerney first got elected, although he was not my choice, he presented a moderate and responsible image. Now we have a record of his performance and we can see that even if he was indeed moderate the influence of the party leadership has resulted in a record that is not what many of his constituents approve. David Harmer represents a departure from Mr. McNerney's approach to issues. If you like the present situation then Mr. McNerney is your person, if you want change and feel we are on the wrong track Mr. Harmer can provide you that alternative.

In reading all the comments on several of the topics on this forum re McNerney and Harmer, I note that while Fox is noted several times in a very demeaning way (as is the Tea Party), noone notes that MSNBC or CNN or NPR are biased (nor Behar, Colbert, Matthews etc) and that lefty leaning people too take their talking points from them, etc. It reminds me of the first Reagan convention when Dan Rather after Reagan's speech took time to note how scripted the conventioneer's response was but with the following Democratic convention he only noted, with tears in his eyes, the democratic enthusiasm, even though, as most know it too is scripted in exactly the same way. In exactly the same way the above writers are biased and can only throw stones rather than debate or have fact based discourse.

Go Jake for presenting the facts of the race succintly without the blame and namecalling of the writers above you. The civil discourse can still be present but it has to be on both sides. Behar type namecalling is truly over the line as is the whining about Fox etc in all the above posts.
