Streetwise: What are your plans for the winter holiday vacation?

Original post made on Dec 17, 2010

With Christmas just over a week away, it's getting really hard to focus on anything but jolly good times. Fortunately, roving reporter Stan Wharton knows just how to pique people's interest.

How smart is it to broadcast to the ENTIRE world that you’re going to be away from your house during Christmas time? There’s lots of bad guys out there.

Perhaps The Danville Express should use a little more discretion before deciding to publish this type of information?

BTW, I recognize one of the kids in the photos as a former neighbor. Looks like she is growing up to be a nice young lady. Good to see kids enjoying Christmas time with their families.

You're right, the posting of such detailed information is somewhat questionable. Because we live in an area with a low crime rate, it's easy to disregard the possibility of a burglary or crime. Then again, Danville police are adamant about crimes of opportunity being extremely common - especially during the holidays.

That being said, I'd like to point you to two articles:

PC World freelancer Leah Yamshon wrote a very interesting article on how everyday technology might be a cause for concern in [Web Link] "GPS- a stalker's best friend."

Similarly, Caroline McCarthy's article on [Web Link] geo-tracking site Please Rob Me exposes "the potential pratfalls of the geolocation craze."

So while we'll be thinking twice about posting detailed information about holiday travel plans, people need to do their own due diligence in determining how much seemingly innocuous information they put out to the masses.

I'm not going anywhere, I am unemployed and looking for a job and just worried about keeping food on my table. It's typical Danville attitude that everyone goes away to the mountains or on cruises for their holiday vacations. Some of us are just happy we have a house to live in!
