I wonder if any student or teacher cared to ask our "esteemed" marxist representative McNerney why he voted to crush the dreams of the DC students and their parents by voting against the DC Opportunity Scholarship program. This program was achieving remarkable results...but McNerney felt more allegiance to his union buddies than to students.

Do you think McNerney cares about kids' education? Think again.

The posting by "mcnerneycares" is spot on! The fools who re-elected him will regret it. Perhaps he voted against the DC Opportunity act to keep poor minorities "in their place"----uneducated and automaton democrat voters. Perhaps we should start sending him small flashlights to shine a light on realities like the deficit etc. May I suggest too---include a small jar of Vaseline for the flashlights to be used to help mcnerney find his exit from pelosi Reid and obama's rectums.

Time to bow down and worship McNerney (again)!
Does anybody else find it worrisome to hear that "Kate Steffy, a sophomore at San Ramon Valley High and participant in the forum, traveled to Washington, D.C. with her family to watch the speech." That any "family" would find any speech by Obama, let alone THIS paticular speech, so significant and important, that they would go to the trouble and expense of carting themselves to D.C. to hear it. Hope they got their bang for their buck!
DE couldn't you have given us readers more of the substance and actual quote of McNerney's speech for us to ponder and consider. You've spent a LOT of DE's space giving notice about this "school trip" by McNerney. Is it going to result in any significant legislation or difference?

The reasons on our fine Representative voting against the DC Opportunity Program were quite evident, for those who don't follow (in lock-step) the Right`Wing Propaganda rags, and would actually RESEARCH the issue (something foreign to many right-wingers. They include:
* No evidence of a statistically significant difference in test scores between students who were offered an OSP scholarship and students who were not offered a scholarship.
* Students who were offered OSP scholarships did not report being more satisfied with school or feeling safer in school than those without access to scholarships.
* This same pattern of findings holds when the analysis is conducted to determine the impact of using a scholarship rather than being offered a scholarship, taking into account the approximately 20 percent of students who were offered but chose not to use their scholarships the first year.
In other words, it was a failure. Period. End of the story!

To Ms Magpie and other koolaid socialists---the points stated previously allude to the general fact that minorities in DC especially cannot escape. Almost anything would be better than what they have---let's not forget it is the "minority loving" dems who always kill voucher ideas and----let's not forget history---did all they could to block the Civil Rights Act in the 60's.

Hope student Kate Steffy is getting a better education at SRVHS than the parrots who interviewed me for a school project a bit ago. They were obviously victims of global warming brainwashing 101. They didn't even know lord gore flies around in his private fuel consuming jet from one mansion to another! Nor did they k ow of the millions of dollars lord gore and friends have accumulated due to this scam!

MissMaggie, excuse me. Please do your homework.
From the following article in the Washington Post >>> Web Link
...entitled "White House Ignores Evidence of How D.C. School Vouchers Work"...
"Patrick J. Wolf, the principal investigator who helped conduct the rigorous studies of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program and who has more than a decade of experience evaluating school choice programs.
Here’s what Mr. Wolf had to say about the program in Feb. 16 testimony to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Operations. “In my opinion, by demonstrating statistically significant experimental impacts on boosting high school graduation rates and generating a wealth of evidence suggesting that students also benefited in reading achievement, the DC OSP has accomplished what few educational interventions can claim: It markedly improved important education outcomes for low-income inner-city students.”
Not yet convinced MissMaggie?
How about this research article entitled "An Opportunity to Throw Kids A Lifeline" Web Link
Oh...and if you'd like further reading...here is an article entitled "How Republicans Follow Through With School Choice, While Democrats Protect the Unions"
Web Link
Now honestly tell the readers MissMaggie, do you still stand by your ridiculous and unsupported comments that the program FAILED?
How about watching the video this time and then tell us that the program failed.
Video >>> Web Link
I'll be waiting with baited breath for you further comments (with sources this time) that the program failed...since you obviously don't believe the principle program investigator, the students, and their parents...who should know.

Another puff piece for Jerry! I'd like to see a week go by without a mention of Jerry on the Express. Seems there's a liberal bias here.

Mike,
I agree that McNerney is hard at work. It takes a lot of effort to destroy so much in so little time. Destroying the private sector is no small task...but he is making huge progress. Destroying our ability to be energy self-sufficient is no small task...but he is making progress. Destroying our children's American dream is no small task but he is succeeding...by making them soooo much in debt that he is enslaving them ... they'll never dig out and never have the quality of life that we have. Destroying our healthcare system through the unconstitutional Obamacare is also his dream. It's not completely a reality yet ... so he shouldn't rest. Destroying the alternative media (a first amendment right) is also his goal...and he is making strides by voting for the "(un)Fairness Doctrine."
This marxist McNerney is working hard indeed. There are a few private sector jobs left however so he shouldn't rest. We have a modicum of freedom left...so he has got to be frustrated. There are a few more Amendments in the Constitution that are still observed but he and the rest of the Congressional Democrats and Obama have them in their crosshairs...since America is the enemy to them.
The Democrats...especially the Communist leaning SEIU are certainly proud of their (wo)man, Jerry.

It cracks me up how inconsistent liberals are with respect to our children. We have drowning warning labels on buckets, people would intervene if they saw a parent smacking their child in the parking lot at Trader Joes, people are concerned about kid's health and complain about McDonald's Happy Meals, we can't put kids in the front seat due to air bags, and the list goes on...but it's okay to allow our children to be taught by tenured socialists that can't be fired and are afraid to compete like everyone else in the real world. Where's the outrage about the power the teacher's unions wield over our children's education, or lack thereof?

Dear McNerneyCares???, let's get rid of government altogether and return to jungle law. That seems to be what you are proposing. Abolish education. Abolish health care. Let's abolish the country while we are at it and return to independent states. Bring back slavery while we're at.

It doesn't surprise me that right-wing commenters on this post would favor private education over public education. The hallmark of public education is that it's available to everyone, regardless of their economic situation.
That equality of opportunity is antithetical to right-wing doctrine, which is inherently elitist. In their view, the wealthy are more deserving. Economic success -- whether earned or inherited, whether by hard work or by dumb luck -- is viewed by them as evidence of almost a moral superiority that entitles one to special treatment: disproportionate political influence, special tax breaks, separate education, gated communities, etc.
Their attacks on public education and their support for vouchers is a ruse. Their supposed concern for the poor or minorities is just a convenient cover for their attempts destroy public education (and equality of opportunity), by defunding them and removing their best students (surely a recipe for failure).
Does anyone really believe that they would ever support the massive expense of a universal voucher system (funded by the government!) that would allow ALL students to attend private schools? Their private schools? Hardly.
Our efforts would be better spent continuing to improve the quality of public education here and elsewhere -- continuing to experiment with educational models that truly prepare our students for a 21st Century society and economy -- whether through charter schools, high-tech classrooms, or whatever shows success.
And, at least in Danville, the college admission rates and test scores show that we've got pretty darn good schools.
