John Baldwin Elementary School was on lock down as well. The Danville police could be seen questioning two individuals in the driveway of a home near Baldwin on Paraiso - at 2:15. I hope that the Danville PD lets the community know what is truly going on, especially if this is related to a person in our community that lives so close to schools!

Greenbrook was also locked down.

Actually, the police cars were out with flashing lights at 11:15, so I believe this is when it happened. You probably saw the police talking to some wirnesses.
Good work DPD!
And always remember Derek's third rule of Darwinism: Crime makes you stooopid!
I mean, just how dumb does one have to be to run down a public street in full view with stolen goods?

Ask if your school has a lock-down procedure in place. Do they have a Disaster Plan to assist in a variety of larger disaster problems? Ask if they have had a drill to shelter in place this year. Ask specific questions. Thanks to the teachers at John Baldwin! Thank you to the John Baldwin parents who pushed for this plan to be in place several years ago when only fire and earthquake drills were taking place.

Thank goodness someone was at home, observant, and made the call. I almost laughed though----a rifle case and a duffel bag? Did they carry a "I just robbed a home" sign too?

Jessica- what day did this happen? You always give times, but would appreciate dates. Thanks!

That's how you catch burglars! Residents who are at home HAVE TO CALL THE POLICE when you see something suspicious. Does the police no good if you see something and don't call. You live in you neighborhoods and you know what is "normal" and what is suspicious. I would rather have the cops come out and find everything is fine than have you say, "Gee I wish I called when I saw it happen. Good assist by the caller and good response by DPD.

went to school with that kid how pathetic, Danville is becoming more and more ridiculous. Now that oxycotton has become hard to get all of the high school kids are moving to black tar heroine now. Glad I got out of town when I did. Great to see that the cops are finally doing something rather than harassing kids smoking weed. I suggest the parents here watch out for their kids. Thanks for the details danville express, this is where I get all my news of past class mates ruining their lives.

Just so everyone in the Paraiso/Everett/Brookside area knows, Joe Cefalou and his 18 year old brother both have a criminal history. The mother (not sure if the father is divorced or deceased) is one of those deep-denial types.
If you live in this area and your house is broken into, DEMAND that the police take fingerprints. Do not take "no" for an answer. Chances are high that one of these two low-life's is the culprit. In talking to people who live near them on Paraiso, it is clear that they have brought a very bad element into the neighborhood, and the sooner this family leaves the better.
I had initially hoped that the perps were from outside the area, but this was not the case.
Congrat's to the mom on having your son make the pages of fugitive.com. You must be very proud. Apparently Joseph gave some lame story about being asleep to the cops. Whether he is charged remains to be seen.
To the Cefalou's, know and know it clearly that we are watching you.

Just an update - we saw JC and his burglar girlfriend outside today (Sunday) free as birds when we drove down Paraiso around 12:15. So no county lock-up. A real pity.
We don't live close enough to video the going's on at this house, but if you do, please record vehicle license plates of visitors. Those who know better than I seem quite certain the brothers Cefalou are also dealing when mommy's at work. The grandma is too frail to do very much. Feel bad for her....

Police Chief Steve Simpkins is a registered user.
Good evening folks,
After reading Derek’s comments, I felt I needed to just clarify a few things that I checked out with Police Chief Steve Simpkins.
Chief Simpkins and Det. Sgt. Allan Shields have confirmed that Joseph Cefalou remains in custody at the county jail.
Also, I asked the Chief in regards to the fingerprint issue and he said that in cases of that sort they always take fingerprints.
Chief Simpkins said, “We want to catch the bad guys as much as you do so we do everything we can to make sure that happens.”
Thanks for the concerns, I hope this information helps set everyone’s mind at ease.
Have a great night.
Thanks

Mr. Gillette: Thank you for providing this information on behalf of the town. I have been impressed with how you address issues and concerns of us Danville residents in the Danville Express. You do a great job in providing us with timely, factual, accurate information. This is exactly the proper use of a town forum. Thank you!

If you say Joseph remains in custody I would certainly like to take your word for it Geoff, but one of the Cefalou brothers was definitely outside their house yesterday at 12:15 with a female friend. It could have been his 18 year old brother - we live two blocks away & I'm not cozy enough with these two to tell them apart - but I was certainly not seeing a mirage. Red haired, about 5'8", somewhat stocky build, wearing a tough guy muscle shirt.
According to his neighbors Joseph claimed to have been sleeping at the time of the break-in, and according to the story above he ditched the bag and gun, ergo without fingerprints the case sounded like it might be tricky. I hope you are right that he hasn't been bailed out, but for now you'll have to color me unconvinced.
As to the issue of taking fingerprints, I and many of my friends in years past have always had to push police to take them. It was NEVER a given. If it is DPD's policy to do it automatically, that's great. However, residents need to understand that without them it is very hard to prove who broke into your house unless the burglar is caught red handed with belongings that you can prove to be yours. If an alert neighbor had not been watching, I see no way Mr. Cefalou would have been caught. And some scumbag - he or one of his friends - would now be the proud owner of a stolen shotgun. Think about the implications of that folks.
I am not here to give the DPD a hard time. As I said in the first post, GOOD WORK! My point is that with many young children in the area, and schools, and some very seedy looking characters hanging around the "C" residence, everyone needs to be alert. I drive or ride past this house almost every single day, often multiple times, so I am pretty darn familiar with the comings and goings of this household.

I believe Derek is confused with who Mr. Cefalou actually is. This explains why he thinks he is still seeing Mr. Cefalou even though the DPD is telling him otherwise. First of all, the home you mention belongs to another family, not the Cefalou's. The "two Cefalou brothers" you describe are clearly the two brothers who do live in that home and they are not Cefalou's. Perhaps Mr. Cefalou is staying with that family or hanging out there with the two brothers. So who you say Mr. Cefalou was "sleeping at the time of the break-in" it's unclear as to whether your referring to the older brother who lives at the home or Mr. Cefalou. I thought Mr. Cefalou was caught in one of your neighbors backyard so how could he say he was sleeping? I think you are clearly confused with who's who.

Danville/San Ramon residents, I suggest that you go out and purchase a firearm for home defense and learn how to use it, you don't have to shoot someone but if you catch a criminal in your house or your neighbors you've done something good for your town. More legally purchased guns = less crime. Protect yourselves.

more guns is not the answer ... every community has problem elements. Deal with it smartly, without going out to buy firearms. And San Ramon residents should not advise Danville, both are quite different communities.

believe or not more LEGAL guns help reduce crime, no one will break into your house if they think you are armed, given that you are home, there's nothing the homeowner could have done in the above situation besides take better home security measures. If you've never used a gun before do not take them for what Hollywood portrays them as. Also the above article is unrelated but it is nice to see that someone protected them self from an attacker.

Resident of Danville, no I do not think I am confused. There is a house on the south-east corner of Brookside and Paraiso. That house faces Brookside. The very next house going east, on the south side of Paraiso, is the one in question, no? Granny in a motor-wheelchair, single mom, two reprobates, old green-silver BMW, white van, sometimes a white truck, and one other four door sedan in the overcrowded driveway, right? Or am I wrong?
While JC was caught in someone's back yard, and he was arrested, I emphasize he had ALREADY ditched the stolen goods, and this makes a difference - and he did claim the lame alibi I mentioned.
As to the pro-gun group here, there are two distinct issues-
1) The mother of the perp needs to think about something: what if the owner of the shotgun had been at home, rather than out at the time of the break-in? Of course she is in denial as to his involvement, but the rest of us know if circumstances had been different she might be planning her son's funeral now.
2) To the owner of the shotgun, and the rest of you gun owners, PLEASE hide your guns, lock them in safes, put trigger locks on them, and put the ammo where it cannot be discovered. This shotgun, had JC gotten away with his crime, could have been used in a robbery or murder. Do you really want to contribute to felons?
I for one am sick to death of reading about brain dead rednecks leaving their guns around, only to be discovered by a child who then plays with the gun and manages to kill a sibling or friend. I feel the same way about pit bull owners. If your gun, or your dog, kills someone because of your provable negligence, you should go to prison for a very, very, very long time.

Yo Derek, how about you leave the kid's poor mother alone? Do you even know what you're saying? "but the rest of us know if circumstances had been different she might be planning her son's funeral now. " Who are you to say that?
Yeah maybe the kid's a deadbeat but you don't know what their mother has had to go through. Do you have any idea how hard it is for a single mom to raise two rowdy kids by herself? You need to understand that these two kids did not have any sort of positive male role models growing up. A lot of my friends are missing some kind of parental figure. A couple of them are orphans. They've lived pretty hard lives.
Now until you become a single mom who has to raise two kids on your own, I suggest you mind your own business. Because, as the rest of us know, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. The police told you that the kid is still in custody, and you don't believe them? What do they have to hide from you?

I appreciate Derek's information and feel his frustration. He is not confused. All the statements he has made about the crime, they match those given by neighbors of the crime victim.
I live near the home in question. I have seen the "kids" hanging out in front of their house and thought they looked like trouble. Now i know my instincts were right as they had a prior record and now this. And to think that the home that was burglarized was just a handful of houses away from where the culprit lives. Lazy or a sign of desperation? I have 4 children and you bet I think about the "What ifs" in this situation....what if this happened while my kids were walking home from school? What if the culprit was not caught and now was in possession of a shotgun (By the way, the owner kept the ammo separate and it was not taken during the robbery)? What if he decides to rob his other neighbors and breaks in when my young teens are home alone?
The frustration and concern is having to live next to repeat offenders. Has he had his 3 strikes yet? When will it end and how far will they go?

A "Rowdy Kid" is one who plays their stereo too loud, has parties when their parents are away, or always has friends drive over late at night. Someone who evades police, possess stolen firearms or burglarizes homes is a Felon.

In response to Derek; The home I referred to as the home of the "two brothers" is the home that faces Paraiso, not Brookside. Where JC lives, I have no idea. I heard he had been locked up for a while on bank robbery? I don't even know who he is. The red-haired boy is the younger of the two brothers who's last name begins with a"M", not "C". Not sure if "Granny", as you name her, lives with them but their older severely disabled sister is wheelchair bound. I am not a friend of the family nor do I condone the activities there but don't think you should be judging that mother until you raise all your children, trouble free. Yes, these two brothers have been in trouble with the law a few times. They are trouble. Drugs are fueling the need for cash in this town. They pawn what ever they steal.
I was pumping gas one day near Denny's and watched what I thought was a drug deal going on. Three guys all driving Jags, wearing sleeveless undershirts, waiting 30 minutes for someone else to drive in - shake hands, pass a coat back and forth and leave. Two guys were mid to late 20's. Followed them as they got on 680 SB and they took off going over 90 mph. Sycamore exit is real convenient for any drug dealers to roll in and out. Wrote down plate #' to report them, but misplaced. If you see guys waiting in their cars in Safeway, McDonald's, Denny's, parks, or any other parking lot, take note! Once another car shows up, they get out of cars, greeting each other and leave in no time.
The drug dealers have got to know that we're watching them. Any of you teens reading this, we're not stupid.
Oh, btw, I recused a pitbull and it's the most loving dog I've ever had!
