Really?! What is the benefit of this? How can you measure the success of both the students/teachers? Is there an ROI in the investment in additional funds to help developmentally disabled students receive extra attention? This sounds like a waste of taxpayer money...

At some point, people need to start asking... Why is this the taxpayer and school's responsibility? If developmentally disabled children (and others) need additional attention, then the parents should step up and assist.

What future do developmentally disabled students have? Is it better to try to bring them up to the "norm" (if impossible) or focus your attention on the students that really can positively impact society and bring about positive change?

I think our "average" students should be the focus of the future. Unfortunately, developmentally disabled students should get additional outside assistance. It's ultimately the PARENTS responsibility to fill in the educational gaps - not the TAXPAYERS! Re-focus folks!

This sounds a lot like trying to solve teenage truancy by taxing them- I mean, fining them... Great idea! Fine kids who should be in school... What a dumb idea! Truant children should serve the community. It would serve to be beneficial to all... Just a thought...

I feel ashamed to live in the same community as "Logical Resident".

I believe we need to take care of everyone. However, it's hard not to disagree that our schools are failing and that additional money is NOT going to fix the problem. It may increase the probability that we'll have more teachers having sex with our students, teachers arguing that you can't disagree with the President like N.C.... Dumb black woman... I would say "African American" but I'm sure she's never been to Africa... Say it with me people, "personal responsibility."

The schools aren't here to educate your kids. You are! Step up! If parents aren't able to educate their kids, then stop having them! All of you morons cry about companies outsourcing and your outsourcing your children's development to a bunch of folks you would never talk to in college (Liberal Arts/Psychology majors, self awareness classes). For all you Dems, you should be able to abort your kids up to the age of 18. Just listen to the President... In Florida, Casey Anthony proved that to be ok.

Keep you mentally handicapped kids at home... teach them what you can. Stop putting your genetic problems on my kids! This social experiment has failed.

I have no problem with a non-profit trying to help in areas that are needed as long as tax dollars along with time and energy of the teachers are not taken away from those students who can learn in a normal environment.

First of all this does NOT cost anyone anything except the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area who will fundraise for the money to keep this program going. Districts and tax payers pay nothing!!
Third, EVERYONE deserves the right to a good education regardless of disability.
Fourth, this program will simply offer educators the training and resources they are not provided by districts to teach children with Down syndrome. At the DSCBA we have the information and resources they need. When presented to districts they were thrilled to be able to have access to training.
Lastly, Educators are amazing people,,,,,,we are investing our time and energy to give them the tools to be able to assist the beautiful children they are currently working with in their schools or may be welcoming in the future who are born with Down syndrome.

Read the article, do you reasearchbefore you react and cause conflict. A non profit, raising money to give teachers a bit of extra training to help kids. Howcan you say that's bad!! No tax dollars, additional training, education, all good things.

Yes, it's true...I, and the rest of the teachers I have worked with and mentored, don't care about kids. We have chosen to spend years and years in classrooms filled with your children, just to torture them. And for that, our "union thugs" have enabled us to get some benefits (which we must supplement). Your comments are one of the reasons young, bright college graduates choose not to go into teaching. Why should they when they have to deal with parents with this type of mentality? I also believe your comments about educating the handicapped is so offensive, that you probably posted it simply to get people to respond.

One of the only good things about an anonymous message board is that you get to see what people "really" think when they are unconcerned about their messages being attributed to themselves, personally. It's a sad commentary that often appears, unfortunately.

Does it really not occur to some of you that we are a community -- that we all ought to invest in all of us -- that THAT makes us all better-off? Do you really lack such basic empathy and human decency that you would exclude those you consider imperfect? Are you really all that convinced of your own innate superiority? And will you be willing to accept the same treatment when you discover that you're wrong about your special nature? Yeeesh.

Evidently "no name" was a student in a district that didn't spend enough money on educating her, otherwise she wouldn't be spouting such ignorance.
This is an incredible step forward for SRVUSD. It shouldn't be marred by a few ignorant soles. Kudos to all involved and a big electronic hug to our kids who deserve the extra needed attention.
No one plans to have a disabled child. It can happen whether you are rich or poor or smart or challenged. The lives of special needs families can be very difficult and the last thing they need are for "no names" who "know nothing" to make derogatory comments and make it more difficult for our families and our children. Fortunately when "no name in Danville" becomes old and disabled, there will be services and help for her to wipe her sorry a** because of advocates like the Down Syndrome League. You're welcome.

From someone in a neighboring community who LOVES what DSCBA does for our kids... To the few people on here who posted comments suggesting kids with DS are "a genetic problem" or that they don't have "a real chance," I'm going to choose to feel sorry for you instead of wanting to throw a heavy object at you. EVERY child has a "real chance," and NO child is "a genetic problem." If you are too narrow-minded to see the promise in every individual, then I pity you. And DSCBA, keep up the good work! We love you and what you do for our kids!

P.S. I'm going to hazard a guess that my son with Down syndrome will be a more positive member of society than any of the narrow-minded people who posted negative replies here.
