In honor of the 30th anniversary of the incorporation of Danville, members of the original Town Council will act as grand marshals during today’s parade.

Danville was incorporated in 1982 and three of the original five members — Schlendorf, Dick McNeely and Beverley Lane – will ride in a convertible near the front of the parade as honorees, said Parade Chairman Wayne Wickham. Member Doug Offenhartz could not attend and John May passed away.

The Kiwanis Club, which has hosted the downtown parade for nearly 30 years, wanted to show its appreciation for the original council, Wickham said. This year’s theme is “Danville, Small Town Values…Big Heart,” and honoring the efforts of the first incorporated council falls directly in line with the parade’s message.

  2. I love the parade! Thanks for hosting it. The only issue is when about 15 men start shooting and the noise is so loud. I thought it was a safe place to take my dog. Unfortunately he got so scared that he started running away in all directions. Luckily I had him on a leash, but every time he heard another shot, he would go crazy again. I couldn’t calm him down. I went in one of the restaurants as I was holding my dog and saw some parents holding their babies’ ears while they were crying due to the loud shots. I ended up having to leave the area, running with my dog (he would not stop for anything!) Finally we got to the car (which was parked very far away). My dog got in the car and shortly after got a seizure, probably due to the traumatic experience. It lasted a long time. He was pretty jumpy the rest of the day. He is usually very calm. He is doing fine now. I would love it if the part of the shootings would be taken away completely in the future parades. Concerned citizen.

  4. Hard to believe that the Tea Party hates this country so much that they have to ruin the Danville 4th of July parade. This is an event to celebrate this country and all they do is show up with hate filled speech about our president. Shame on them. It doesn’t matter what your politics may be but you dont ruin a great tradition with your immature anger.

    The Tea Party has done nothing but complain for 3 plus years. They have no accomplishments even though they control Congress. I have seen 2 year old kids act more adult than them.

    Message to the Tea Party- Try acting like Patriotic Americans instead of sounding like the terrorists who want to destoy this country. Work with America, not against it.

    And shame on the Danville town council for letting them participate with such hate filled rhetoric. I am sure the even the Republican Party was embarrased by the tea party participation.

  5. The parade was just fantastic. We love the small town; but big ideas and fun of the parade. We’ve been coming for many years, and it’s always just wonderful. This year, with the helicopter, really put it over the top, though. What a thrill.

    I have to tell you how sad it was though; to see most of the folks that knew what was coming; to try and escape the last of the parade and the Clampers; There was such a traffic jam on Front street, that we sat and still was exposed to it all, even thru tightly shut windows. We always say to each other, why do we have to endure this?

    The little children and all the dogs suffer terribly; from these unnecessary men coming every year, and ruining a wonderful parade. What purpose do they serve, to deserve a place in our area’s wonderful parade. I do so hope; that maybe you’ll consider leaving them off next years roster. Would make a wonderful day, so much easier on all. Nothing good is served; by these grown men doing their noisy thing.

I appreciated the parade, however, it kind of reminds me of bad firework shows from my childhood, when a couple of rockets go off and then…nothing…and then…a couple more rockets go off…and you never know when it is over. The timing of the parade was awful by the time it got down towards the livery. There were gaps of 5 minutes between floats/displays and everyone around me was asking “is that it?” constantly. Of course, I know the Clampers always end it, but no warning signs like years past! I wish the parade organizers would tighten it up to keep it flowing.

    Also, get rid of non-essential parade marchers. Several were on their phones or didn’t look like there was any reason for them to be in a parade.

    Dogs were discouraged on the parade website and the newspapers. Too many people, too loud – leave them at home next time.

    And don’t get me started on this stupid chair thing. Just come to the parade in the morning with your chairs and wait like 99% of the rest of the world does.

    Sorry, I don’t have Mr. Webster handy, but what are Clampers? Career alcoholics? Laundry accessories? Are they the ones with guns Tina was referring to? Nothing more entertaining than wetbrains with firearms.
    I usually manage to be out of town when the parade happens, or if I’m home it’s too bloody hot to bake on lawn chairs by the Palm Reader.

  9. I wish that there would have been a clear reference to the folks in
    the mustang (the original council members)…no signs or banners that I could see, and I was right on the curb…If I didn’t know Susanna Schlendorf,I would have had no idea who was in that car!
    They deserve to be recognized for making Danville what is is today!!

  10. The 4th of July Parade in Danvile is a long-time tradition for us since 1969.
    The parade would have been so much better if there more bands marching and the music. People love the bands. The bands that were in the parade should have been spread out more instead clumping them together. Please encourage more music in the parade. It would add so much more to this parade which has grown significantly through the years.
