Two new incidents of racist graffiti in California High School bathrooms occurred at the end of the week, prompting school officials and parents to meet Friday evening and discuss the four such incidents that have occurred at the San Ramon campus in less than a month.
About 100 parents joined principal Sarah Cranford and San Ramon Valley school district representatives at the Broadmoor Drive campus to talk about the racist graffiti incidents, the latest of which were discovered in bathrooms Thursday and Friday, according to district spokeswoman Elizabeth Graswich.
“Parents expressed concern and frustration with the recurring racist graffiti,” Graswich said of the parent meeting. “There were a lot of questions about discipline in general and the fact that the school is not able to share more details due to student confidentiality.”
Graswich added, “We are grateful for so many parents taking their Friday night to come to the school, share their feelings and ideas for solutions. We will take all the information that we gathered to create a plan moving forward.”
“By working together, we will build an even better environment in which students will continue to learn and thrive,” she said.
The most recent racist graffiti — representing the fifth incident district-wide since late-October — was found in a Cal High boys’ restroom Friday morning. Graswich said all restrooms were temporarily closed, with students only able to access with an adult escort while school administrators investigated and assessed the situation.
San Ramon police were notified and are assisting in the ongoing investigation, according to Graswich. The restrooms reopened just before brunch on Friday morning with increased supervision and with regular checks of the restrooms for graffiti, she added.
Cal High officials and the school’s police resource officer were working to review videos from cameras outside the restrooms as well as interviewing students, Graswich said Friday afternoon.
One day earlier, Cal High experienced another racist graffiti incident in a bathroom, with the investigation by school and police officials still ongoing, Graswich said.
The San Ramon school faced two separate racist graffiti incidents late last month as well, both involving slurs targeting African-Americans written in marker on bathroom wall tiles — one in a boys’ restroom Oct. 19 and the other in a girls’ restroom Oct. 24.
A Cal High student admitted responsibility for the first incident and was set to face “appropriate school disciplinary action,” Graswich said at the time.
Danville’s Monte Vista High School also experienced racist graffiti in a boys’ bathroom last week.
The bathroom was closed to students after it was discovered Wednesday, the graffiti was cleaned up and Danville police and school administrators started an investigation to find those responsible, Graswich said.
Monte Vista’s entire school faculty and all 2,400 students started the day Thursday at an assembly where teachers talked about their personal experiences with discrimination and 100 students got up to speak as well, according to Graswich.
No other racist graffiti incidents have been reported at district schools in the past month, according to Graswich. The district has two other comprehensive high schools and 36 campuses overall.
District schools started their week-long Thanksgiving break after classes let out on Friday.

An adult escort to the restroom when you are 16 or 17???? Out of 2500 students, that is about 20 per minute.
Who hires “adult bathroom escorts” for 17 year olds????

Maybe the assembly should be held for parents. We should ask ourselves whether kids first learn this stuff at home…..Or would that upset those who have a pristine image of our community?
This is all too predictable given the polarization in our society. The right wing bigots now feel they have permission to act like thugs. Their parents should have their names published as I know that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The meetings at the school should be for the parents to teach and train them how to raise responsible young adults. This I know is a tall order.
These incidents are not surprising as it is a reflection of the society we live in. Although we live in the San Ramon Valley, we are not immune to these things happening. Since the election, hate crimes have increased dramatically. Racists, bigots, etc are now emboldened and.feel they have been given a “green” light to openly express and demonstrate their hatred of others. The matter will worsen.
I believe this is just the beginning and similar incidents of this nature will only continue.
The mistake the school made was to make this public and call the police. Can’t they handle this themselves. Once out there, there will be copycats in other schools. Perhaps a troubled teen will continue this since he got the attention he was seeking. I think the kids rule the schools.
Speculation: The student responsible for the graffiti was put up to it by his anarchist parents. Why? To stir up trouble because Trump was elected president. Then they can falsely claim that Trump is causing racism.
I’ll be sure to forward the apologist comments here to the superintendent, principals and the media.
Just goes to show that these incidents are not about some rogue kids. There appear to be many adults and entire families in Danville and San Ramon who have a chip on their shoulders about the multi cultural and multi racial world we live in.
