There seems to be a trend of people using public comment period to voice their hatred. There is a similar problem in San Ramon where a person named Helen calls in as "Taiwan is a country" and uses public comment period to voice hatred toward people of Chinese descent. It is a shame that these people are drowning public comment period with their hate speech. I'm glad to see that Walnut Creek will be taking action to address this, and I hope Councilmember Wilk can make it through the bullying without resigning. Shame on those people.

I agree with Emma J. Social media has allowed people to use pseudonyms to say the kinds of things they would never say in a public forum. I served as a council member for 12 years, and speakers at public comment were asked to state their names for the record. My opinion is that if you are going to make a "public comment," your identity should be known before you speak, whether in person, by phone, or online.
