The article failed to mention Buchanan being in the back pocket of the teachers' unions. She voted a few months ago to NOT pass a bill that would have made it easier to dismiss sexual predators in the classrooms. She does the union's bidding. Another liberal socialist who needs to be watched closely. Wanna see her tax returns too.

This appointment of Joan Buchanan as chairwoman of the education committee is a huge win for the education unions in our state. Sadly Joan has been bought and paid for by the unions in her political career. As long as Joan and other politicians working "for the children" - are funded yearly by the unions, our families and kids don't stand a chance in California. Follow the union money! Even our SRVUSD board members are supported financially by CTA union funds! Of course primarily during their campaign years. Why do you think Joan was the only politician who voted "no" to the proposal of more stringent policies against teachers accused of molestation? Maybe she could explain her logic in that vote? The Contra Costa Times wrote a scathing one page editorial on Joan and her "no support vote" on this subject and she never did explain herself.

Joan Buchanan. now clearly titled as the liberal Democrat that she has always been, had so many years of being a part of the "business as usual" problem in our school systems. (And it was her past "years" of experience within our school systems that gave her the credentials to get her elected to the Assembly. So we breed these politicians at the local level.)
Now she will continue to exert her past patterns of failed policies upon the entire State of CA and its bigger education system. Get braced for more "spending is the solution" type of thinking (and political bills).
The UNIONS must be really happy!
So sorry to see so many of YOU voted her in. Now pay the price!
See the continued destruction of California before your very eyes!

Buchanan's new "job" secured my vote for a loud NO on the upcoming SRVSD bond issue (tax). I urge others to join the mantra----Want Joan? Then NO $!!!!

Another sow at the public trough year after year. I like Mike's idea. Part of the problem--the teachers' union and purchased politicians.

Great Joan will maybe show up, sign in and vote present. She plays both sides, a very wealthy women, she can call it any way she wants. Of course she could care less about kids ever see her when she coached soccer? Her players were encouraged to play dirty and were allowed to behave badly she was an embarrassment to the league.

This woman (Joan Buchanan) has a chip on her shoulder and she has become powerful in her own right by, not only being intelligent, but also hard working. She is articulate, but do not be fooled; she has a chip on her shoulder for various reasons and this comes out when she votes in her political positions. It's a "means to an end" type of philosophy and she is tough as nails when it comes to what she wants. It's just too bad this passion of hers seems to be driven by bitterness.

Perhaps people are waking up to realize she and other dems are part of the machine. Voting them out is possible.....dems are the new socialists.

Amen to all above. Thee old saying is that "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely." The Democrats have reached that position in California. Joan Buchanan is part of the problem.

Hey Hank, personally I don't think the "dems" are "'part of the voting machine." They ARE the voting machine in this lame state. A mind-set stemming from the late 60's, and early 70's philosophy. "Peace, love, fairness to all "...Check out the age of our politicians collectively and you'll find Sacramento filled with "peace loving" haters...

They are so conflicted they aren't capable of voting with logic or reason. Add the union mentality to this problem and you get the liberal state gone wild - no more $$$ for to spend on education in the "welfare state."

These comments give me hope...

I just paid the SRVUSD $3,000 for a "school impact fee" to add square footage to my home because IF I sell my home there COULD be more children that move in... Really?!... Mind you, I'm not adding any more children, just square footage... The SRVUSD charges $2.90 per square foot... This fee is going up to $3.20 at the end of this month...

My kids go to private school... but here's yet another check to fund the teacher's unions and pay their pensions... In 50 states, California ranks 47 this year. Congratulations on a great job, California teachers - and your corrupt unions that continue stealing from us and future generations!

I guess as long as we let them educate us, then we won't know any better. It's wonderful when teacher's "teach" their opinions rather than facts.

Bashing public schools and teachers is soooo much easier when you send your children to private schools.

After reading the negative comments, and as a long-time resident and parent volunteer, I just have to respond. The residents of Joan Buchanan's district are fortunate to have such an intelligent and hardworking assemblymember representing us. She cares deeply about education and children, as well as many other areas and her analytical skills and work ethic are so exceptional that she has earned respect from legislators on both sides of the aisle. Joan was a terrific school board member for nearly 18 years prior to her election to the Assembly. Our school district is top-rated nationally despite extremely low funding, partly through her careful fiscal management and drive for excellence. Congratulations to Assemblymember Buchanan for being appointed to chair the Assembly Education Committee. The children of California are sure to benefit from her leadership.

Nancy, make no mistake. Joan is in the back pocket of the unions because she placed herself there. This has been a choice for her, to work closely with and for unions in Calif. Sure she has an empathetic and compassionate exterior - appearing to be a very good listener. But when all is said and done, she votes with the unions, plain and simple. Do we really care if a politician is pleasant; while they're voting against the safety of children in our schools? Has she ever explained to you why she was the sole vote against a more strict policy towards teachers accused of molestation in our schools? Recently, the Contra CostaTimes wrote a very long editorial questioning how she could have voted against our students in the schools regarding this issue.

Joan Buchanan does Not reflect or support conservative viewpoints - the liberal viewpoint on issues is her driving mantra. After 18 years on the SRVUSD (as you stated) why should we honor her contribution of liberal votes regarding her career in the district? She worked with all the other board members and district personnel who support the unions and liberal mentality. Of course she's a mother and cares for her kids and the schools in the district, what. She still has a very liberal viewpoint in politics and she surely doesn't represent me when she votes.

How can you possibly believe our school district is "top rated"??!! NOT just a few, but ALL of our colleges here in Calif. have been complaining for years that our schools are NOT preparing the students in this state for college Math and English. When it is declared (yearly) that they have to place over 55% of the incoming students into REMEDIAL English and Math classes entering college, ("if") they are accepted, we have failed our kids.

It's very important to accept these truths - even in our own very "special" high priced school district. We all know we're underfunded by the state. We do not need to accept funding as the excuse for mediocrity in our schools in our district.

We need to vote out Joan and all the other liberal minded politicians or we'll never get our schools back on track in this state! Special Ed and English Learning areas of public education are sucking the district funds dry from the majority of students and classrooms. The federal government has mandated our districts to fund these programs at local school levels whether we have the money or not! The state board of education ACCEPTS this and then shoves these responsibilities onto the district. There has to be a better way for our politicians to honor our children in Calif. classrooms. BUT, that would take too much thought and tough decision making - from our school boards to the politicians in Sacramento, no one wants to offend or appear tough when it comes to decisions. You have to do with the money you have and that means making tough decisions where ALL cannot be pleased. Why are our children in school?... To learn math, science, English, etc. That should be the number one focus with every dime our state spends on Anything regarding education. That is the focus - the unions distort and destroy the focus. Joan is a union supported representative for us. Ultimately that IS a conflict of interest. With her liberal union CTA Agenda, she can talk all she wants about "the kids" - her personal votes in the education committee will represent unions.
