Roosters are no longer welcome in the Town of Danville after the Town Council voted Tuesday night to change the zoning ordinance regarding housing poultry.

David Casteel, code enforcement officer, said the changes weren’t extreme, but more of a “tightening of the language.” Under the amendment, roosters would be prohibited in residentially zoned properties, they declared a limit to the number of hens permitted on properties zones as single family residential, and the definition of “small farming” was modified. Previously, there was no text distinguishing roosters and chickens.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Casteel said there was “surprisingly” no public comment.

The changes would go into place July 1, assuming the Town Council would approve the changes for the second time in June. Residents were granted a 90-day grace period, meaning that they are expected to comply with the new rules starting Sept. 28.

“The intent wasn’t to limit the ability to keep chickens,” Casteel said.

Giving a specific number — maximum of 10 (R-20 and R-40 zoning districts) or 20 hens (R-65 and R-100) depending on the size of the parcel of land — prevents someone from having an extreme amount. The ordinance also states that chickens aren’t allowed lots smaller than R-20, which is about 20,000 square feet.

The Town has received an increased number of complaints regarding the keeping of poultry, according to reports.

  1. Julia’s back…”No Public Comment” WOW…I wonder why?????? AH, maybe there was no public comment because the folks in Danville have more serious issues to be concerned about than a bunch of chicken city officials…oh, I’m sorry, I meant concerned about a bunch of chickens that the city officials want to keep out. Danville, never ceases to surprises me.

  2. Dear Emily,

You are far too young to remember Laugh-in and the numerous concerns for chicken jokes. I am quite sure the Town Council felt quite foolish in their consideration of Roosters and had flashes to Laugh-in during the deliberations.

Now banning squirrels and mocking birds is a logical next step. Squirrels thundering across roof top in the early morning and mocking birds starting their songs at 5AM somehow challenge Roosters as noise pollution.

“Very Interesting” (Have Dolores explain it to you)

  3. I see that the Town has asked residents to think twice before buying pest control products. Seems that more pesticides would be the easy solution to the chicken problem.

Don’t these council folks have anything better to do?

  4. I was unable to attend the Town Council Meeting Tuesday due to illness. If I had attended, there would have been at least one comment. There is a rooster in my neighborhood and my family loves to hear him. How sad, another measure to help us lose our town’s rural roots.

  5. I like roosters….So do my neighbors, They keep the bugs down in my veg garden No need for pestasides….How sad, now I have to find old Rufus a new home and start using pestasides…..

  6. It figures, all this guy has to worry about is chickens. There are pleanty of other problems out there and he is worried about chickens.
And WE are paying his salary!

  7. I was so sorry to hear about the “new” rules regarding chickens in Danville. We have had chickens for many years. Our children have enjoyed gathering eggs and watching baby chicks hatch. Besides chickens are just hilarious to watch. They eat a lot of bugs and in this way provide non-toxic pest control. We moved to this area for the rural atmosphere–now our fine city fathers are gradually getting rid of any semblance of “rural.” It makes me sad! I don’t understand why people who don’t like animals around would move to an area where there are many animals (especially farm-type animals). Why don’t they go back to the city?

  8. Poor Julia…kicked out again…that wasn’t very nice Emily. Censored Journalism, WOW in 2010, what a shame. I guess what we all need to do is post messages that are sweat and not sour…agree and never disagree…only say what the Editor and staff want to hear. Like I said previously, the Danville Weekly has become weakly. Read it while you can folks, I’m sure it won’t last long….I see the censorship patrol coming down the hall already.
Oh, well…hey Gunslinger and all the common sense posters, we had our day. Dear Editor, keep censoring the truth and you just might find your comment list of authors made up of automaton’s. Good bye…

  9. Julia. I couldn’t agree more!!! “Disrespectful” to whom and “offensive
language”, not even!!! Referring to bad decisions as, moronic hardly qualifies!! Wow, why bother to respond with an opinion….I am offended!!

  10. On the contrary, this story and the edits (for profanity and calling a decision moronic…both disrespectful) has given the whiners on this forum something to complain about. So everyone is happy.

  11. Thanks Rose, you appear as well as Resident 47 and some others to be dealing with a full deck. By the way folks the only thing Rose did was refer to the brain dead Danville council as a bunch of moron’s and she’s as correct as others would say they are a bunch super intelligent people.

Oh, I sure the censorship guru will be out there with his/her editing machine and whala..it’s gone.

  12. Dear Emily, I really think it’s time to pull the chicken story…no one really gives a darn about the chicken’s and the rooster’s anymore… It’s been beat to death. Thanks Julia

  13. Dear Emily,
I hope you don’t let the critics and get you down. You seem to be taking all the constructive and helpful comments on this forum seriously and you’ve been adapting accordingly. What a hazing you’re getting! Welcome to our community – learn to laugh at the eccentrics and the folks who use their anonymity as an excuse to be controlling and harsh. They’re out in force!!!

  14. What a shame. Why? Who’s complaining. Aren’t there more important decisions to spend time and energy on? Maybe the complainers should be banned — not roosters. I enjoy hearing the rooster in our neighborhood and so do others. It’s such a shame this area is changing and losing what little rural flavor we once had. And what animal will next be banned?

  15. Hey “Neighbor” you are so right…keep the roosters and the hens and get rid of the chickens that think they are doing the City good. I know, I’m not from your wonderful little Danville. The more I read about how Danville functions and misfires the happier I am that we the people of this great community of Alamo voted down the opportunity to become a City like heaven forbid Danville. Go Roosters and Hens… Thanks for listening, Julia from Alamo.

Okay…Julia critics…go for it, unless you’re too “chicken”
