First grader raises $250 to honor WWII vet

This weekend, the Vista Grande first grader raised money for a cause that is a little closer to home: a honorary paver stone for his grandfather, Captain Gervase "Gerry" Eckenrod, a WWII veteran. Eckenrod's stone will be at the top of the memorial, in the same block as a paver in memory of President James Garfield.

Gervase Eckenrod was captured at MERODE which is a smal rural town at the northeastern edge of the Huertgen Forest. My name is Albert Trostorf, I am the current Mayor of Merode and a passionate WWII historian. I know the building where Mr. Eckenrod was captured and also one of the German soldiers who captured him.
