Litter in the Lunardi's Parking Lot Solution

Original post made by JRM, Vista Grande Elementary School, on Jul 23, 2013

First off, I must say in general our town is very clean and pockets of littered areas are seldom seen in Danville. Lately I have noticed a big increase in the paper wrappers, coffee cups and food containers blowing around the Lunardi's parking lot and onto Railroad Avenue. I park in the lot regularly to access the Iron Horse Trail and I recently made the observation that we absolutely need additional trash receptacles in this area. The only existing trashcan is next to the bus stop, a long walk and very hard to see if you were looking for a place to throw away that coffee cup. I suggest we place an additional can or 2 on the WEST side of the parking lot adjacent to the trail. Case in point, 2 weeks ago I went for my regular run at 7:30 in the morning and I saw none other than Don Ritchey, our esteemed ex-mayor, walking along Railroad picking up litter along the curb! Kudos and thanks to Mr. Ritchey for this anonymous act of citizenship and perhaps the new receptacles will enable him to just enjoy his morning stroll and not have to carry a litter bag with him!!
Mr. Gillette, is this something the town can explore?
Thanks to all who pick up after their dogs by the way, there has been a MAJOR improvement over the last 10 years in that area. The bags along the trail have been a great solution.

If the litter is coming from Lunardi's and other food purveyors maybe they should add a few more cans on their property site too. I am all for a couple of more cans on the parking lot side of Lunardi's. I have seen broken beer bottles in the parking lot on mornings I walk too and food packages from Buger King. What happened to street cleaning crews? Town has enough staff to take care of this. But it gets down to the people and residents. If they don't care enough to throw away cups/paper, etc. then all the garbage cans will not make them stop littering. Dog owners for the most part are good at this cause there are usually so many people around watching that they can't help but pick up their dogs poop.

If the litter is more of a problem on Lunardi's main lot (north side of store, facing the Railroad Museum), compared to the smaller lot on the south side, then it may have something to do with the farmer's market. Not even "intentional" trash, perhaps, but just the by-product of holding that sort of event.

I haven't tried to pay attention to the availability of trash cans at/during the farmer's market, but it may be that more trash cans are needed. But this wouldn't really be Lunardi's responsibility....

Lunardi's has some benches set up adjacent to the Iron Horse trail, which is nice of them to provide. And I think that there is at least one trash can by these benches. This area has seemed reasonably neat when I've stopped there during bike rides.

I walk through that lot 3 mornings a week. Much of the litter looks like it comes out of people's cars. Occasionally someone has emptied a car ash tray on the ground or there's other non-food related garbage.

I miss Andronico's--they did a great job of making sure the lot was cleaned of trash.

Studies have been done that show that if there is trash already there, people are more likely to dump their own trash. If it's clean, people are less likely.

Geoff Gillette is a registered user.

Good afternoon,

Sorry for the slow response, I was out of town and just got back.

@JRM - I have passed the question along to the Town's maintenance staff, and we will also have conversations with the property management agency for the site to see what can be done about the issue.

Thanks for bringing it up!
