'Slow down' warning hurts neighbors' eyes

Original post made on Jun 9, 2008

In Tim Brennan's home is an expansive window with a picturesque view of green trees, rolling hills, his neighbors' beautifully landscaped yards - and a 15-foot speed monitoring sign flashing "SLOW DOWN" in bright red letters. He came home one day and there it was.

I believe the signs are very effective for slowing traffic and making drivers more aware of their speed. When driving West on El Cerro it becomes very easy to loose a sense of the vehicle's speed. I drive the route in the morning and evenings and see people's driving habits slow down when they are reminded of their speed. As a parent and a community member I think these are an effective and needed deterrent to keep the El Cerro corridor neighborhood a safer place for their residents to leave their driveways and increase safety for children playing in front yards and walking on sidewalks.

I can surely sympathize. I own a home in Magee Ranch and saw workers marking things off one day, and the next came home and was absolutely astonished to see a huge pole with solar panel and antenna on top smack dab right across the street. Let me explain, house is at top of Shadewell Dr., no neighbors across street, just beautiful open space, same as rear of house. HAD beautiful Mt. Diablo View, along with 4 other homes at top. Now we see Mt. Diablo with a pole through it. Needless to say we all got on the horn calling to see what was this and were told by PGE that these 'smart meters' will be used by Town of Danville and will wirelessly read our meters. Meters on homes will be extinct. This blew our minds, we can not have flag poles, basketball hoops etc. in front yards but they are putting these on 'their PGE easements'. HOA got involved and PGE was nice enough to have meeting with us in streets to discuss. Apparently, PGE thought everyone had been notified and their "outside contactor" may have got over zealous getting done so quickly. They stated they would work with us as there were many options like underground networking, incorporating into the light pole, etc. but all more 'costly'. More costly to whom? we asked. We are the owners who now have down graded property value with horrible view. We choose Magee Ranch as there were no poles, no wires everywhere, beautiful, tranquil, full of deer, coyote, turkeys and has that country homely feel. Until these going up! So far, nothing has been done, no other meetings and we are still waiting...
