The newly-renovated San Ramon Library maintains its beloved charm on the outside with a fresh modern flare on the inside.
After roughly 20 months, the staff and contractors are polishing off the finishing touches before revealing the $6.5 million project to the public Saturday.
The re-opening celebration Saturday at the library, 100 Montgomery St., is open to the public and will include entertainment and special events for all ages from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“This plan was a cost-effective alternative to tearing the building down and constructing a new library, an option that was estimated at tens of millions of dollars more,” said San Ramon administrative and marketing analyst Nicole Blazin.
In addition to a new entrance from Bollinger Canyon Road, improvements to the building include a 3,100-square-foot expansion to the second floor with a designated area for teens, two listening rooms and a Wurlitzer jukebox with Bluetooth connection capability to showcase the library’s jazz collection, additional computer stations and electrical outlets to charge devices built into furniture.
There is also an expanded children’s section equipped with interactive “Burgeon Seed Pods,” which use colorful pictures and panels to encourage learning through play.
Technological enhancements include electronic check-out stations for books and laptops. The fluorescent lights were also replaced with LED lighting and the book aisles illuminate by motion sensor for energy efficiency. Natural sunlight streams through during the day with the addition of two tubular skylights and two bay windows.
Patrons will also find 6,500 new books purchased and donated by the San Ramon Library Foundation, bringing its collection up to approximately 86,000 literary works.
The project debuts on the 28th anniversary of its original opening, which happened serendipitously after the date was pushed back due to construction delays, according senior community library manager Nancy Kreiser.
The library staff expects the turnout to reach more than 2,000 for the grand re-opening. “People are very excited about this, they’ve been waiting,” said Blazin.
