San Ramon will be abuzz this weekend as the family production of “Fly Guy, the Musical” stops by the Dougherty Valley Performing Arts Center for morning and afternoon performances Saturday and Sunday.

A new play presented by Bay Area Children’s Theatre, “Fly Guy, the Musical” was written for the stage by Bay Area playwright and composer Austin Zumbro and inspired by the “Fly Guy” children’s books by author and illustrator Tedd Arnold.

The stage musical follows what happens when young Buzz brings his pet insect on a school field trip. The show features is highlighted by the antics of Fly Guy and his pal Fly Girl, and the caring friendships that help all the characters overcome the challenges they face, according to theater officials.

Directed by Nina Meehan, “Fly Guy, the Musical” stars Dominic Dagdagan as the titular Fly Guy, Anne Norland as Fly Girl, Benjamin Nguyen as Buzz and Katie McGee as Liz. The show, co-commissioned with Oregon Children’s Theatre, is recommended for ages 4 and up.

The production made its debut last month in Berkeley and will continue from May 20 to June 11 at the Children’s Creativity Museum Theater in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, it flies into the Dougherty Valley for a one-weekend run this Saturday and Sunday at the Performing Arts Center, located at 10550 Albion Road. Shows are 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. both days.
