After months of deliberation, the Danville Town Council has decided upon tobacco retailer regulations, which the council is expected to adopt Tuesday, to restrict new tobacco shops entering the town.

If approved, any new tobacco retailer wanting to be located within town limits will not be allowed to be located within 1,000 feet of schools, parks and libraries, or 500 feet from other tobacco retailers.

The ordinance would also place a prohibition on hookah and vapor lounges from opening in town, as well as any significant tobacco retailer — significant is defined by town staff as anywhere at least 20% of floor space or 50% of gross revenue is dedicated to tobacco products.

Tobacco retailers already established within the town will be grandfathered in, and not subject to any new requirements.

The ordinance is up for second reading and final adoption Tuesday night. It should be noted that the vote is listed as a consent item, and will be approved without further deliberation unless a council member or resident requests further discussion or additional information.

The council will meet to discuss regulations and other issues at its regular meeting Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Meeting Hall, 201 Front St.
